Stargate legend reveals why they won’t be part of the new reboot

With a new Stargate series coming to Amazon MGM Studios, Richard Dean Anderson – the actor known for playing Jack O’Neill in the original shows and movie – has explained why he’s not participating in the revival.

Anderson attended the Metz’Torii convention in France and discussed the new series, which is scheduled to begin development in November 2025.

Anderson explained that he spoke with Brad Wright, the former executive producer of Stargate, about the new project. Wright told him the current producers and owners want to establish a completely fresh start with the franchise, meaning it will feature all new characters.

I haven’t been asked to join, which is good because it avoids putting me in a tough position where I’d have to decline. It’s just a new situation, and I feel like the most experienced person involved.

When asked if he’d be willing to appear in the new series, he simply said he couldn’t comment.

Martin Gero, who previously worked on the show Blindspot and is familiar with the Stargate franchise, will be the creative force behind the new Stargate series. He’ll be responsible for writing, producing, and overseeing the show as a whole.

When the series was announced, Gero shared that his first television job was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. He spent five years working on all three Stargate series, and he credits the franchise with teaching him everything he knows about making television – it’s a fundamental part of his approach to the craft.

I’m incredibly excited to be leading the Stargate franchise into the future with Amazon MGM Studios. This is especially for the dedicated fans who’ve kept the spirit of Stargate alive through conventions, rewatching the series, and their continued support. And to anyone just discovering Stargate, I promise you’re about to experience something amazing.

I’ve been a fan of Stargate since the very beginning! It all started with the movie back in 1994, and it’s been amazing to see it grow into so many different shows and movies over the years.

As a longtime sci-fi fan, I wasn’t surprised to see this show consistently mentioned when TopMob recently asked readers for the greatest series ever made. It landed at number nine on their list, and honestly, I get why – it’s a standout in the genre.
