It creates this incredibly false sense of security, and then the tension just slowly, relentlessly builds until… well, you know. It’s a masterclass in subverting expectations.

It’s even more devastating than Ned Stark’s death, partly because it feels unexpected, and partly because of the sheer scale of the tragedy – even those familiar with the books will be surprised. Because we’ve spent more time connecting with Robb and Catelyn, their fate is especially heartbreaking, and it’s made even worse considering everything the Stark family has already endured.

It’s a pivotal moment that beautifully sets up future events, and feels particularly special today because we don’t see storytelling quite like it very often anymore.
