New Avengers: Doomsday fan art sets up a mighty battle.
The upcoming Marvel movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will bring together key players from the franchise. Chris Evans made a brief appearance as a different version of Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine earlier this year, but Avengers: Doomsday marks his return as Steve Rogers. The film will also reunite Evans with Robert Downey Jr., who this time will be playing the villain Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man. Their confrontation is already generating a lot of excitement among fans.

I was thrown off by the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer – it showed Steve Rogers packing away his Captain America suit, making it seem like he was retiring! But thankfully, some incredible fan art reveals Cap is back in the suit, facing off against Doctor Doom! And it’s not just Cap – Robert Downey Jr.’s version of Doom is fully armored, complete with that iconic green cloak and mask. The art shows a really intense moment – Cap’s shield is holding Doom back, and you can see green sparks flying from Doom’s hands, hinting at his powerful magical abilities. It’s a great tease of what could be!
Robert Downey Jr. has only played Doctor Doom briefly, in a quick appearance in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Although he removed his mask to reveal his face to Franklin Richards, the scene was shot in a way that obscured his features, leaving fans unsure if the Doctor Doom appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will have the same scarred appearance as the comic book version. However, some official information about the character and his future role in the storyline has been revealed recently.
Disney says Robert Downey Jr.’s version of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday will be a brilliant scientist and a powerful sorcerer. This suggests the movie will stay true to the character’s comic book origins, and present a challenge that would be hard for Captain America to overcome – even harder than the battles we’ve seen in fan art. While Captain America has shown incredible strength in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like briefly stopping Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, fighting a Doctor Doom who wields magic might be too much for him.
Despite the challenges, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a powerful tool to even things out. While it’s unlikely Captain America will learn magic to match Doctor Doom, he’s set to wield Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, again in a 2026 MCU film. This was revealed in the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, shown exclusively at CinemaCon 2026. As seen in Avengers: Endgame, Captain America with Mjolnir is a formidable opponent, and he could pose a similar threat to Downey’s Doctor Doom. Fans are hoping the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer will include scenes featuring a confrontation between the two characters.
