Netflix Officially Decides the Fate of Alan Ritchson’s Hit Military Sci-Fi After 3 Months

Netflix has announced that a sequel to the action film War Machine, starring Alan Ritchson, is officially happening. The news came on Tuesday, and director Patrick Hughes will return to lead the project. Hughes is also co-writing the script with James Beaufort and will serve as a producer.

Although it hasn’t been officially announced, sources suggest Jack Ritchson will probably be back for the next War Machine film. He played a ranger candidate known only as 81 in the first movie, which kicks off a new sci-fi series about a team of soldiers who face a surprising and dangerous enemy.

War Machine Is One of Netflix’s Most-Watched Movies

Netflix’s sci-fi action movie, War Machine, quickly became a hit after its March release. It’s been viewed 139 million times, earning a spot among the top 10 most popular movies ever on the platform. Currently at number 10, it still has a chance to move up and potentially surpass The Gray Man, starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, before its viewing window closes.

War Machine is a decent action film, but it doesn’t explore its ideas very deeply and doesn’t give enough to do to its supporting actors. While John Ritchson delivers a solid performance and does his best to carry the movie, one actor can’t save it entirely. Ultimately, War Machine isn’t particularly memorable.

Hideo Kojima shared on Twitter that he really enjoyed the film War Machine, describing it as a mix of Predator and Metal Gear. He called it a fun movie for fans of the genre, praising Alan Ritchson (known for Reacher) for his performance and noting that Dennis Quaid also stars.

What Is Netflix’s War Machine Series About?

War Machine follows an elite team of U.S. Army Rangers whose rigorous final selection training exercise unexpectedly becomes a desperate battle for survival against a terrifying enemy. The film, directed by Patrick Hughes, features Alan Ritchson, Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Keiynan Lonsdale, Jarryd Goundrey, and Daniel Webber.

We don’t yet know the plot of the next War Machine film. Netflix could simply repeat the original story with a new set of soldiers. But if Joe Manganiello (who played 81) returns, the movie might expand on the story’s background and reveal more about his character, possibly leading to future sequels.

War Machine is streaming now on Netflix.
