God of War: Laufey Officially Announced, Stars Kratos’ Wife Faye

Sony Santa Monica has revealed its latest game, God of War: Laufey, which, as many predicted, centers around Kratos’ wife, Faye. The game will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. While a release date hasn’t been announced, a 20-minute gameplay demonstration shows the story beginning with Kratos mourning Faye’s death.

Okay, so things didn’t go as planned. Instead of, you know, the afterlife, my character, Faye, woke up in this totally bizarre fantasy world. It’s full of weird, colorful butterflies and this hilariously clumsy little creature that I ended up following. I was still feeling pretty dizzy as I walked past this huge fallen tree, but I knew I had to keep moving. It’s like, somewhere else, Kratos and Atreus were starting their adventure, and I needed to figure out what was happening to me.

She’s quickly ambushed by a strange plant monster, but she fights back using magic and a new sword, easily defeating its allies. Faye is much more agile than Kratos, able to launch opponents, perform impressive aerial combos, and even dodge attacks in mid-air. After equipping some armor, she slips through an opening and escapes the ruins, finally getting a clear view of the enormous cube-shaped structure she’d seen earlier.

Moving into a wild, overgrown space, Faye was ambushed by two heavily armored soldiers and captured. She was then brought before a large warrior with flaming red hair, who seemed to be in charge. However, something distracted the leader, and she left with her enormous, lion-like companion to check it out.

Faye unexpectedly meets Rue, a talking sword made of ribbons, and Frank, a surprisingly sentient cube. They explain she’s in the Everyland, a sort of afterlife, and the three quickly team up to escape. With Rue as her weapon and Frank offering support, Faye fights her way through opponents. She eventually confronts the tough enemy she encountered before, and after a wild battle, she defeats him, leading into the show’s title reveal.
