Russo’s talk Dr Doom

Russo’s talk Dr Doom….

Although Dr. Doom isn’t scheduled for release for another six months and is still undergoing final edits following a preview at SXSW London, the Russo brothers were present at the event. The film is predicted to be one of three potential billion-dollar hits, alongside The Odyssey and a new Spider-Man film. While the question-and-answer session was meant to cover general filmmaking topics, the audience was most interested in hearing the Russo brothers discuss their fifth Marvel movie and, specifically, Dr. Doom.

Initially, they declared it their favorite Marvel movie so far, but didn’t explain their reasoning. Anthony simply noted that the film perfectly captured the essence of the character, feeling that the costume and portrayal were a perfect match.

Joe explained that one of the biggest challenges is balancing what the creative team loves about the original comics with what fans love. Sometimes those things align, and sometimes they don’t. Ultimately, they aim to capture the essence of the comics while also bringing something new to the story. They don’t want to simply retell existing stories; they want to expand on the characters and create a fresh experience. He believes their film successfully strikes that balance, staying true to the core of Doom from the comics while also offering a unique and exciting narrative.

Despite discussions with the Russo brothers, details about Doctor Doom weren’t as forthcoming as expected. However, Anthony Russo stated they are essentially starting the project over, saying, “We’re back to phase zero, we’re starting over from scratch.” He emphasized they aren’t building on any previous ideas, and are instead taking a completely new approach.

The two filmmakers admitted they were feeling burnt out after seven years with the franchise, but a new idea from writer Stephen McFeely sparked their interest in returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They explained that this creative concept – which is central to the story of Doomsday – opened up a wealth of possibilities and revitalized the project. They couldn’t share the specifics of the idea, but it ultimately made them excited about continuing with the series.

I was really hoping we’d get a new trailer, but sadly, nothing showed up. While we don’t know the full story yet, rumors are swirling that the movie might be based on the “Infamous Iron Man” storyline – where Doctor Doom tries to become a hero by taking on the Iron Man suit. It sounds like we’ll probably hear a lot more from the Russo brothers about Doctor Doom once fall arrives, which I’m really excited about!

“Avengers: Doomsday” will be released on 18th December 2026.
