Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian & Grogu
After a seven-year break, Star Wars is back in cinemas, and it’s all thanks to The Mandalorian & Grogu. The film follows Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal) and his son Grogu on a thrilling adventure filled with exciting characters like Imperial warlords, Hutt gangsters, and brave New Republic pilots. They’ll face off against gladiators and all sorts of monsters as they journey through the Outer Rim. One particular part of this year’s movie has me really excited about what’s coming next year in the Star Wars universe.
Just shy of a year from now, Shawn Levy will direct the new Star Wars film, Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling. The cast also includes Flynn Gray, Amy Adams, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Matt Smith, and Daniel Ings. Though details are still limited, the movie is set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, making it the furthest point in the Star Wars timeline we’ve seen on screen.
Fans have been eagerly anticipating the next Star Wars film from Lucasfilm, especially after a memorable scene in The Mandalorian & Grogu.
The Mandalorian & Grogu Has Some Solid New Republic Squadron Action
I really love a scene from the beginning of The Mandalorian & Grogu – it happens right during the opening credits.
The opening scene, clearly influenced by Top Gun, shows the X-Wing and Y-Wing fighters of Adelphi Squadron returning home as the sun rises. We see New Republic starfighters landing and their crews preparing for more patrols in the Outer Rim – it’s a really impressive sequence, made even better by the first appearance of Ludwig Göransson’s theme from The Mandalorian.
I especially loved the beginning of the movie, but the exciting appearance of Adelphi Squadron at the end was another highlight.
Din Djarin, Grogu, and Rotta the Hutt get into a dangerous situation on Nal Hutta, but help arrives in the form of Adelphi Squadron. Commanded by Colonel Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver, the New Republic Rangers launch an attack on the Hutt Syndicate’s base, leading to a thrilling aerial battle against the Hutt’s ships and defenses.
Even though it’s a brief part of The Mandalorian & Grogu, it definitely makes me even more eager for the spaceship battles we’re expecting in Levy and Gosling’s Starfighter next year.
Will Star Wars: Starfighter Finally Scratch The Rogue Squadron Itch?
When Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron movie was first announced in 2020, fans were thrilled by the idea of a film focused on pilots and their starships. Unfortunately, the project has been stuck in development for over five years, leading many to believe it might never be made. Now, hopes are turning to Starfighter, which is scheduled for release next year.
We don’t know much about Shawn Levy’s new movie yet, but the title hints that starfighters will be a key part of the plot.
Shows like The Mandalorian & Grogu have already delivered impressive spaceship battles, so a full movie dedicated to starfighters is an exciting possibility. Fans can anticipate incredibly large-scale aerial combat – something truly spectacular and unlike anything seen in a Star Wars film before, especially given the movie’s title, Starfighter.
We’re hoping the new movie will be packed with exciting space battles – think fast-paced action, daring missions, and everything that makes Star Wars so enjoyable. The Mandalorian & Grogu might have given us a preview, but Starfighter, coming next year from Lucasfilm, promises to deliver an even bigger experience.
Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian & Grogu is currently showing in movie theaters. And keep an eye out for Star Wars: Starfighter, which will be released on May 28, 2027.
