Insomniac Games showed off a lengthy gameplay demo of Marvel’s Wolverine at Sony’s State of Play, and it impressed viewers. The demo featured a full mission, and included appearances by Jean Grey and other well-known characters. The highlight was the game’s fast-paced and intense combat, but the presentation also showed the physical consequences Logan suffers during these fights. While Wolverine can heal quickly, the gameplay revealed that he isn’t invincible and can still be killed – and explained how.
The latest gameplay footage shows Wolverine facing a particularly tough enemy – a more powerful Reaper than he’s encountered so far. He takes a significant amount of damage, pushing his healing factor to its limits. According to game director Mike Daly, this healing isn’t unlimited; if Wolverine takes too much damage before he can recover, his heart can stop, resulting in death (as reported by Variety). You can see his healing factor in action in the video linked below.
Here’s Exactly How Wolverine’s Healing Factor Works, And How He Can Die If Pushed Too Far

Designing a health system for a character who is nearly impossible to kill is tricky. Daly explained how he incorporated a healing factor, but also made sure the character still had vulnerabilities and ways to be defeated.
As a huge Wolverine fan, I was really interested to hear how they were handling his healing factor in the game. It’s always been a core part of his character, but making it work in gameplay is tough. What they’ve done is allow Logan to actually die – if his heart stops, he’s gone, and that’s shown by a health bar, which is pretty straightforward. But here’s the cool part: outside of fights, he can heal super fast. His body just regenerates energy, so you don’t need to worry about finding health packs or doing repairs – he’s always ready to go! It’s a great balance of keeping him vulnerable but also true to his abilities.
When he’s fighting, his focus is on attacking and defeating enemies, which significantly slows down his healing. While he can still heal, players need to play aggressively to stay alive. This encourages using a wider range of moves and customizing his mutant powers to heal by capitalizing on moments during combat, explained Daly.
Besides rapidly healing from injuries, the character also has a unique ability to survive fatal damage. If his heart stops during battle and he’s filled with enough rage, a surge of adrenaline can restart it, bringing him back to life – you saw a glimpse of this in the gameplay trailer where his body quickly recovers. However, this is a last-ditch effort that completely drains his adrenaline, leaving him weak and vulnerable for a period afterward. So, if he manages to revive, players need to play carefully to avoid taking too much damage again.
Marvel’s Wolverine releases for PS5 on September 15, 2026.
