‘What Happens to Gods When They Die?’: PS5’s New God of War Pulls All Pantheons into One Magical Place

I’m really excited about the new God of War game focusing on Laufey. Now that I’ve had time to learn more about it, I’m completely embracing that feeling of anticipation.

I was really intrigued by a line in the PlayStation Blog post: it asks what happens to gods when they pass away. That concept alone has convinced me this is something special.

It’s a really thought-provoking question, and Cory Barlog and Ariel Lawrence, both longtime developers at Santa Monica Studio, talk about it in detail in a new video interview that I highly recommend checking out.

You’ll experience the game as Faye, Kratos’ deceased wife, shortly after her death, finding yourself in the Everywhen—a unique realm resembling a theme park built for forgotten gods.

This features the two villains shown in the trailer: Sekhmet, an Egyptian goddess of war, and Begtse, a Mongolian god of war.

We can expect to see many of the Greek gods Kratos killed in past God of War games reappear, likely including his father, Zeus.

The game has almost limitless potential, and the recent gameplay trailer clearly showed that Santa Monica Studio’s artists are incredibly talented. It’s amazing to think about all the unique and beautiful places we’ll get to explore in the game.

So, in a recent interview, Cory Barlog – the creative director – was talking about how much he loves Faye and Sindri. He really wants to dig deeper into the God of War universe and explore a whole new side of things, something beyond what we’ve already seen in the games. It sounds like he’s got some really cool ideas for expanding the world!

I’ll admit, when I first heard the whispers about this game, I was skeptical. The initial idea didn’t really grab me. But the more I’ve thought about the story, the more hyped I’m getting! It’s a really bold and imaginative concept, and I think it’s going to give Santa Monica Studio’s amazing team a chance to really show off everything they’re capable of with gameplay and visuals.
