Horizon Steel Frontiers Pushed to First Half of 2027, Cinder City Out in Second Half of 2026

NCSoft has pushed back the release of Horizon Steel Frontiers to sometime in the first six months of 2027. The company revealed this in a presentation for investors, but didn’t say whether the game would launch worldwide at that time, or if it would first be released in Korea, which is a common practice for online games made there.

So, the company didn’t really say why they’re delaying the game until the first half of 2027. They just mentioned it’ll be coming out alongside a bunch of other titles like Defect, Astrae Oratio, and Bonfire. Honestly, it seems like they’ve got a really packed schedule for 2026 already – games like Cinder City and Time Takers are coming out later this year, so maybe they just needed to space things out a bit.

NCSoft and Sony first announced they were working together almost two years ago, and their massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Horizon Steel Frontiers, was officially revealed in November 2025. The game is planned for PC, iOS, and Android devices. Many have noticed the lack of a PlayStation 5 version, considering Horizon is a major franchise for Sony. According to executive producer Lee Song, NCSoft is willing to develop for the console, but the final decision rests with Sony.

This new online role-playing game will offer a fresh experience centered around battling massive machines. For example, players will be able to use a special tool called a Pullcaster to climb onto these machines after breaking off a piece. They can also set traps on damaged areas and even weaken enemies with various status effects.

According to executive producer Sung-Gu Lee, everyone gets to be a hero in Horizon Steel Frontiers. The game focuses heavily on customization, letting players express themselves with a lot of detail. When creating your character, you’ll be able to choose from the tribes established in the original Horizon game.

Notably, Horizon Steel Frontiers is being built with Unreal Engine 5, a change from the Decima Engine typically used in the Horizon series. Lee mentioned that they’re collaborating closely with Guerrilla Games, who have a lot of technical skill, to create the game.

We collaborated closely with Guerrilla to maintain the original game’s beautiful look, but also create gameplay that feels fresh and distinct in Steel Frontiers. By using the advanced graphics of Unreal Engine 5, we’re delivering stunning visuals and seamless multiplayer, both on mobile and PC.

Besides Horizon Steel Frontiers, another multiplayer game set in the Horizon world is also being developed. Guerrilla Games is creating Horizon Hunters Gathering, a co-op game for PC and PlayStation 5. It has a unique visual style and will offer two main ways to play: Machine Incursion and Cauldron Descent.

Horizon Hunters Gathering has been tested with players in several closed playtests, the latest of which ran from May 22nd to 25th on PC and PlayStation 5. A firm release date hasn’t been announced yet.
