Marvel’s Wolverine Devs Clear Up the Cameo Everyone Thought They Spotted in the Trailer

The recent trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, shown at the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play, featured appearances by characters like Mystique, Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Jean Grey. However, one brief appearance—a character resembling Deadpool—was harder to identify. Insomniac Games has offered some clarification, but hasn’t revealed everything just yet.

Creative director Marcus Smith recently spoke with Variety about a red-suited swordsman appearing in the film. While many viewers will assume it’s Deadpool, Smith confirmed that isn’t the case.

Smith explained that the game features a significant amount of introductory setup, which should prevent player confusion. While not featuring Deadpool, the developers aimed to create the definitive Wolverine experience by surrounding him with popular Marvel characters. Players can expect to see familiar faces like Jean Grey, Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Mystique, among others.

Deadpool Was Not in the Marvel’s Wolverine Trailer

There’s a good chance this character is connected to The Hand, a legendary group of ninjas known from the Daredevil comics. Like Deadpool, they often wear red and are skilled swordsmen. He also has a five-fingered symbol on his shoulder pad, which could be a reference to The Hand. This connection would support comments made by Smith, who mentioned Wolverine being surrounded by popular Marvel characters, and The Hand would be a powerful enough group to challenge him. For now, we’ll likely have to wait for another trailer, blog post, or the game’s release on September 15th to find out for sure.

It’s unclear if Deadpool will appear in Marvel’s Wolverine, but the two characters have teamed up in several video games before. They’ve both been playable in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, and Marvel Rivals. They even had a detailed relationship in the 2013 Deadpool game, including a funny scene where players could slap an unconscious Wolverine. While Wolverine probably won’t get revenge in Marvel’s Wolverine, the game developers at Insomniac are known for including Easter eggs and references, so there will likely be at least a nod to Deadpool, even if he doesn’t make a full appearance.
