Netflix’s 5-Part R-Rated Horror Show Makes The Haunting of Hill House Look Tame

Though many consider Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House to be the greatest horror TV show of all time, another Netflix series demonstrates that it’s not the most disturbing or graphic horror offering on television. Horror has always been a groundbreaking genre, frequently challenging what’s acceptable on TV. Back in the early days, Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone often faced censorship issues because of its bold mix of social commentary, science fiction, suspense, and thought-provoking horror.

In the early 1990s, HBO’s horror series Tales from the Crypt helped establish the network with its shocking and violent stories. Before critically acclaimed shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, and Sex and the City challenged TV censorship, Tales from the Crypt was known for its graphic content and nudity. Later, in 2005, another horror anthology, Masters of Horror, even had an episode deemed too disturbing to broadcast.

Back when channels like AMC, Showtime, and HBO were known for pushing limits with their content, one horror series crossed the line for its network. Considering this history, it’s interesting that Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House became Netflix’s most popular horror series. Though the limited series is critically acclaimed, it’s actually not the most graphic or shocking horror show out there – Netflix’s lesser-known Slasher is far more daring in that regard.

Slasher Is One of TV’s Darkest and Goriest Horror Shows

The first season of Slasher, which debuted on Chiller in 2016, follows a series of violent murders committed by a masked killer in the quiet Canadian town of Waterbury. Katie McGrath plays Sarah, who is determined to solve the crimes, even if it means revealing the town’s hidden secrets. Though the premise might seem similar to Hulu’s Pretty Little Liars, Slasher is significantly more graphic and intense.

The first season of this series is incredibly violent, feeling like a genuine slasher film—and it’s arguably even more disturbing than movies like Scream. While American Horror Story is known for being strange and over-the-top, Slasher stands out with its shocking kills and relentlessly grim storylines, making it a much darker show than Ryan Murphy’s often campy and lighthearted series. The second season, “Guilty Party,” which takes place at a summer camp, only intensified this darkness, delivering some of the most unsettling plot twists ever seen on television.

Slasher’s Anthology Approach Makes The Horror Show Uniquely Dark

Unlike other horror shows like American Horror Story, Slasher is more intense and graphic than Mike Flanagan’s series, and more realistic than Tales from the Crypt. It’s truly one of the best horror anthology shows on television. What sets Slasher apart is its clever use of the anthology format, telling a different self-contained story each season, all centered around the slasher horror trope.

Similar to American Horror Story, each season of the show features a new story with new characters and locations, but often brings back familiar actors in different roles. And, typically, almost everyone dies by the end of each season. For example, Season 3, Solstice, took place in a modern city, Season 4, Flesh and Blood, was a satirical look at wealth and power – similar to shows like Succession, The White Lotus, or Saltburn – and Season 5, Ripper, was a historical drama set in 1904.

Unlike some horror shows that build suspense slowly, Slasher doesn’t hold back. It features graphic deaths and focuses on revenge, delivering a relentlessly brutal experience. While not for those easily disturbed, viewers looking for something more intense and shocking than shows like The Haunting of Hill House will find Slasher a delightfully vicious and shocking watch.
