Dune: Prophecy’s Sardaukar May Break Frank Herbert’s Dune Lore (But It Makes Perfect Sense)

The first season of the show has viewers eager for more stories about the beginning of the Imperium. Taking place around 10,000 years before the events of the original ‘Dune’ novels and films, the series shows how powerful groups and organizations—like the Great Houses and the Bene Gesserit—first came to be and how they shaped human politics for thousands of years. The final episodes may have also introduced the origins of the Sardaukar.

As a huge fan of Dune, I was really excited to see some potential hints at the Sardaukar! They didn’t mention them directly, but references to the Emperor’s elite fighters and Desmond Hart becoming a Bashar strongly suggest these incredible warriors are either already here or will be soon. It’s a fantastic prospect for anyone who knows the books. I admit, introducing them now feels a little early given what we’ve seen so far, and it might seem like a change to the established story, but I have faith it will all come together in a satisfying way.

The Sardaukar Are the Emperor’s Elite Soldiers

The Sardaukar first appeared in the novel Dune, but their origins remained largely unknown. Later books in the Dune series revealed more about them, though the story rarely focused on individual Sardaukar characters. By the time of God Emperor of Dune, their importance had diminished, and they eventually disappeared from the story.

In the original Dune story, the Sardaukar were the emperor’s elite soldiers. They were famous for being highly skilled and fierce fighters, and very little was known about where they came from or how they were trained. Though their numbers were small, a single Sardaukar warrior was considered equal to many soldiers from the armies of the noble Houses.

The arrival of the Sardaukar troops at the Battle of Arrakeen was what ultimately caused House Atreides to fall. The Emperor’s choice to send these soldiers to support House Harkonnen was the key to their victory and clearly demonstrated his opposition to Duke Leto Atreides.

The Sardaukar’s unwavering loyalty and elite fighting skills were crucial for keeping peace throughout the universe. Because of this powerful military force, the emperor could overcome any single Great House, solidifying his position as the ruler of humanity.

As a longtime observer of the Imperium, it always struck me that the Emperor, despite his fearsome Sardaukar troops, wasn’t invincible. There simply weren’t enough of them to withstand a truly united front from all the Great Houses. It was a precarious situation, really – this balance of power between the Houses, the Bene Gesserit, and the Spacing Guild kept things stable for over ten thousand years. Then, Paul Atreides came along and, well, everything changed. He ultimately conquered the universe, shattering that long-held equilibrium.

Since the Sardaukar are the emperor’s elite soldiers, Desmond Hart was likely assigned to either this legendary unit or one of its earlier versions. This idea is strengthened by the fact that Hart receives the rank of Bashar, which is a command position specifically within the Sardaukar.

Finally, as Dune: Prophecy . While it certainly established by author Frank Herbert.

Although the emperor’s personal army was created before the events of the first novel, it probably hasn’t formed yet in Dune: Prophecy. The show has established that the planet Salusa Secundus still exists, and this army relies on its destruction to come into being.

The Sardaukar Are Trained on Salusa Secundus

Frank Herbert initially conceived of Dune while exploring the relationship between ecology and human societies. He was fascinated by how environments shape people, and how people, in turn, impact their surroundings. This interest is evident throughout Dune, with a whole section dedicated to the ecology of the planet Arrakis and the efforts of its inhabitants, the Fremen, to transform it. Later in the series, a central idea emerges: that making Arrakis more habitable actually weakened the Fremen’s traditional way of life as warriors.

For a long time, the origins of the Fremen were unknown throughout the universe, but Frank Herbert explained how they were transformed into such skilled fighters. This concept was further developed in later books written by Herbert’s son, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson.

A central theme of the story is that harsh landscapes create resilient people. The history of the universe tells us that Salusa Secundus, the original home world of the Corrino family, was once a beautiful planet. However, sometime between major historical events, it was destroyed by nuclear war, transforming it into a desolate and unforgiving place.

Let me tell you, the fallout from that initial conflict was fascinating. The Corrino family, smarting from whatever came before, relocated to Kaitan and essentially turned their old planet, Salusa Secundus, into a nightmare prison world. But here’s the really clever part: they discovered they could breed incredibly fierce warriors in those brutal conditions. It was a closely guarded secret, of course, but Salusa Secundus quietly became the training ground – and the home – of the legendary Sardaukar. Talk about turning a weakness into a strength! It’s a chilling detail that really adds depth to their power.

Soldiers were recruited from a planet where children were raised in extremely difficult conditions, leading to a high mortality rate before their teenage years. Only the most resilient individuals survived, and they underwent rigorous training to become formidable warriors. This training also included religious indoctrination, emphasizing brutal combat skills and absolute obedience to the emperor.

The result was a military force that would ensure House Corrino remained in power for millennia. Throughout the history of Dune, only one group proved capable of matching – and even exceeding – the Sardaukar in skill and devotion. This was due to the fact that only the desert fighters of Arrakis endured similar brutal living conditions and possessed equally unwavering beliefs.

Frank Herbert’s core idea was that people are products of their surroundings, and that difficult circumstances can forge incredibly resilient individuals. This concept, however, presents challenges when considering the events in Dune: Prophecy.

Dune: Prophecy Could Be Changing the Lore of the Sardaukar

Having just watched Dune: Prophecy, I’m a little puzzled by the depiction of Salusa Secundus. It’s clearly a thriving planet, the heart of the Corrino empire, and definitely not some desolate wasteland. Because of this, it feels strange to think they’re already training the fearsome Sardaukar warriors there – it just doesn’t quite fit with what we’ve seen. It makes me wonder if the timeline for their emergence is being rushed a bit.

Bringing them into the story without a clear purpose within the world, or connection to the ideas Frank Herbert created, would feel out of place. And while the special forces unit Desmond commands might seem similar, it’s not necessarily the legendary Sardaukar.

While potentially the origin of a future group, Dune: Prophecy seems to be setting the stage for how things will develop. However, some Dune fans might not like the idea that these powerful warriors could come from places that aren’t as challenging as Arrakis, Salusa Secundus, or similar harsh planets.

It’s logical that the creators of Dune: Prophecy would introduce the powerful Sardaukar faction early on. The show focuses on the rise of the Imperium, which serves as the backdrop for the original Dune novels, taking place thousands of years in the past. Ignoring the foundation of the emperor’s strength wouldn’t fit with the story they’re telling.

Okay, so I’m a huge Dune fan, and I’ve heard the new show, Dune: Prophecy, is going to introduce the Sardaukar a bit early and with some changes to how they’re usually portrayed in the books. That’s a little worrying, honestly, because it feels like it might mess with some important parts of the story and what Dune is all about. I know a lot of us fans are going to have strong opinions about whether these changes work or not, but it seems like the showrunners do have a bigger plan for season two, which is good to hear. It’s definitely a risk, but hopefully, it pays off!
