Obsidian Entertainment has faced some challenges recently. After being acquired by Microsoft in 2018, the studio released The Outer Worlds, a space-themed RPG that received good reviews in 2019 and a sequel in 2025. However, the series hasn’t performed strongly enough to warrant further installments. Although their other game, Grounded 2, has been well-received, Obsidian is looking for a major success to turn things around.
The recent issue with Obsidian’s upgrade offer for The Outer Worlds is particularly disappointing. It had the potential to attract new players and improve the developer’s image, but it seems to have had the opposite effect, potentially damaging Obsidian’s reputation. In today’s gaming industry, where public opinion matters so much, this could be a significant setback for the company.
Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds Error Is A Real Problem For The Developer

Obsidian Entertainment faced a lot of criticism after the release of the “Spacer’s Choice Edition” for The Outer Worlds. The original game was removed from sale in late May, but Obsidian had promised players who already owned it a free upgrade to the new version on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. They clearly communicated this upgrade plan on Steam and social media, and even worked to include players with physical copies. Many fans bought the original game before it was removed from sale specifically to get access to the bonus content.
So, it looked like Obsidian was getting a nice boost of good press and some final sales for The Outer Worlds, which is awesome since it’s been out for six years. But it turned out they kinda promised more than they could deliver. Steam players got the upgrade they were expecting, but those of us on PlayStation and Xbox who just have the original game were left out because of some complicated technical stuff and issues with how things are set up on those platforms. Obsidian’s been really good about saying they want to fix things for us frustrated players, but honestly, the damage might already be done. It’s a bummer, because I was really excited for the upgrade.
The Damage To Obsidian’s Reputation Might Be Worse Than It Seems

Today, a developer or publisher’s reputation is crucial in the gaming world. A strong community can lead to success, while bad publicity can quickly cause problems. Obsidian Entertainment may have recently made a serious misstep that has upset many fans. Potential new players who were excited about the Spacer’s Choice game might now be turned off by this issue.
Players who previously enjoyed the game or were considering buying the downloadable content might feel let down, especially since Obsidian Entertainment initially promised a free upgrade. Even those who weren’t interested in the game will likely remember this situation when considering future titles from the studio. Many online gamers are upset, feeling that a larger company is taking advantage of them.
I’ve been seeing a lot of discussion online about how the developers could’ve just made the DLC free for a limited time to get it into players’ hands. But honestly, their apology and explanations feel like they’re more worried about looking good than actually making things right with us. It’s a bummer, and while it probably won’t affect The Outer Worlds much since they’ve already said they’re not making any more content for it, it does make me worry about how they’ll handle future games. It feels like they’re prioritizing their image over player satisfaction.
Future games from Obsidian could be affected by this issue, especially if social media users continue to link the company to it. Ideally, enough players will enjoy the content Obsidian released, and the controversy will fade away. Other game studios have overcome similar problems by releasing successful games. Regardless, this situation creates a lot of pressure for Obsidian’s upcoming projects. Hopefully, they can move past this. If they don’t, the current issues could continue to negatively impact their future work.
