Thor’s Hammer Is Really Easy To Wield In Magic: The Gathering

Mjolnir, the powerful hammer wielded by Thor, is famously difficult to lift – historically, only a select few have been strong and worthy enough. Now, this iconic weapon is coming to LEGO sets as part of the Marvel Super Heroes collection, and it will be much easier for LEGO characters from across the multiverse to use!

Mjolnir, the hammer from Marvel Comics, doesn’t just anyone can lift. It tests the character of whoever tries, and very few people have been found worthy of wielding its power – the power of Thor, the god of thunder. While Donald Blake and Jane Foster are well-known for temporarily becoming Thor, other heroes like Captain America, Storm, and even Superman and Wonder Woman have proven themselves capable of lifting it on occasion.

Thor’s Hammer In MTG Comes With A Harsh Restriction

I’m so excited! Thor is finally getting a Legendary Creature card in the new Marvel Super Heroes set, which means he could be an awesome Commander! And of course, Mjolnir is coming too, as a Legendary Artifact. But here’s the cool part – it has this new ‘Worthy’ ability. Basically, you have to earn the right to use it, which sounds like it’ll make things really interesting!

The keyword ‘Worthy’ means only Red, White, or Red/White Legendary creatures that aren’t villains can wield Mjolnir. This is a pretty specific rule for Magic: The Gathering, but it stays true to the comic books, where very few people have ever been able to lift the hammer.

A Surprising List Of Characters Can Use Mjolnir In Magic: The Gathering

However, there’s a surprisingly long list of characters from Magic: The Gathering who are powerful enough to wield Mjolnir. Here are some of them:

  • Arcee, Sharpshooter β€” The pink & white lady Autobot from Transformers.
  • Amy Pond β€” A Doctor Who companion who could easily usurp his main character status with Thor’s hammer.
  • Aunt May β€” Spider-Man’s aunt, who, to be fair, has been the Herald of Galactus before.
  • Bruenor Battlehammer β€” Drizzt Do’Urden’s ally and dwarven king in Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur’s Gate 3.
  • Casey Jones, Vigilante β€” The masked ally of the TMNT ho could add Mjolnir to his bag of weapons.
  • Cloud, Planet’s Champion β€” The protagonist of Final Fantasy 7, who could pull off a mean Omnislash with Mjolnir.
  • Edgar, Master Machinist β€” The lecherous, chainsaw-wielding royalty from Final Fantasy 6.
  • Elesh Norn β€” One of the greatest villains in Magic: The Gathering.
  • Godzilla, Doom Inevitable β€” Maybe it scales to his size?
  • J. Jonah Jameson β€” A journalist who is obsessed with getting pictures of that menace, Spider-Man.
  • Karlach, Flame of Avernus β€” Baldur’s Gate 3 party member and all around badass.
  • Icingdeath, Frost Tyrant β€” An evil dragon from Dungeons & Dragons.
  • Merry, Esquire of Rohan β€” The less annoying of the two Hobbits who didn’t go to Mordor in The Lord of the Rings. Then again, he did help Eowyn kill the Witch-King of Angmar, so that makes him pretty worthy.
  • Mog, Moogle Warrior β€” A Moogle from Final Fantasy.
  • Raphael β€” A member of the TMNT with multiple cards who can use Mjolnir.
  • Sephiroth, Fallen Hero β€” The mass-murdering villain of Final Fantasy 7 who wants to blow up the planet with a meteor.
  • Shadowfax, Lord of Horses β€” Gandalf’s horse from The Lord of the Rings, who presumably holds Mjolnir in his mouth, like Sif from Dark Souls.
  • The Neutrinos β€” The annoying aliens from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who must take turns holding it.

The “Worthy” ability in Magic: The Gathering feels a little loose. It would have likely worked better if it also required a creature to be a “Hero,” especially since it was introduced with the Marvel Super Heroes set. Currently, almost any creature in the Magic: The Gathering universe can potentially become as powerful as Thor.
