God of War Laufey’s “Fresh Yet Familiar” Combat Allows Tailoring Rue and Phranque to Your Playstyle

After showcasing exciting gameplay from God of War Laufey, Kevin Peterson, lead hero designer at Santa Monica Studio, and Denny Yeh, combat design director, talked about the game’s combat system. The footage revealed the new game will include features from the original God of War trilogy, like jumping and performing mid-air combos.

According to Yeh, the team aimed to improve the already successful combat from the recent God of War games while also bringing back some of the over-the-top action from the older titles. The addition of a jump button allows for more dynamic and exciting combat possibilities compared to the more realistic feel of the previous two games.

I believe this creates a combat system that feels both new and comfortable, and I think players will really like it.

Peterson explained that a key goal was to make Faye very mobile. By letting players smoothly switch between aerial and ground movements, they created a character who felt incredibly responsive and enjoyable to control.

Faye’s quickness is also useful for avoiding enemy attacks. For example, when battling Begtse, she can jump over his fire waves, but if she doesn’t react fast enough while in the air, he can continue his attack with a combo.

Along with faster movement, you’ll now fight alongside Rue and Phranque. Rue is a powerful spirit connected to Faye’s sword, appearing as ribbons. She’s surprisingly strong and lets Faye pull enemies closer, quickly move around, or attack multiple foes at once with a sweeping, damaging attack.

Phranque is also a helpful ally in battles. If you manage to push an enemy towards him, he’ll send them flying, creating an opening for another attack. But that’s just a small part of what he can do.

According to Yeh, players will be able to customize both Ru and Frank throughout the game to fit how they like to play.

Although Faye was a central character in the gameplay, the game also features a wide range of other content, including powerful evil gods, massive creatures, and impressive moments.

Will we see Zeus back in action? Could Odin show up to help Faye get revenge? It remains to be seen. As for God of War Laufey on PS5, there’s no confirmed release date yet, but according to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, it’s not expected to be released for many years.
