Premiering in 2024, The Acolyte was a particularly interesting addition to Disney’s Star Wars lineup. The show was unique because it was the first to delve into the High Republic era, taking place about 100 years before The Phantom Menace. It introduced a completely new set of characters and hinted at connections to existing lore, like the appearances of Yoda and Plagueis in the final episode. Unfortunately, despite its potential, The Acolyte was cancelled after only one season. However, the show’s creator, Leslye Headland, hasn’t ruled out the possibility of it returning in the future.
In an interview with Empire, The Acolyte creator Lesly Headland expressed her strong desire to make a second season if given the chance. “I’d absolutely love to!” she said, adding that she believes more viewers discovering the show could lead to renewed interest in continuing the story. Headland also revealed that a potential Season 2 would have explored connections between the character The Stranger, Vernestra Rwoh, and Darth Plagueis, as well as other elements established in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Headland shared that she’s heard from many passionate fans who were upset about the show’s cancellation. She recently spoke with someone at a play who told her how much they enjoyed it, specifically praising the expanded backstory, action scenes, and the show’s deeper meaning, which they interpreted as a reflection on religious experiences. Another fan particularly appreciated how the Jedi were depicted.
Will The Acolyte Season 2 Ever Happen?

Despite the mixed reactions to The Acolyte, many viewers were understandably upset when it was canceled. The final episode set up a promising storyline, introducing significant characters like Yoda and Darth Plagueis. The appearance of Plagueis was particularly anticipated, as fans had hoped to see him in live-action ever since he was mentioned in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. Canceling the show right after teasing his role felt especially disappointing. At the very least, a second season would allow the creators to resolve the cliffhangers and fulfill the potential of the story.
Just because a show could be brought back doesn’t mean it will be. Disney cancelled The Acolyte because not enough people were watching for the cost of making it, and that likely hasn’t changed. Disney has even admitted that the streaming model isn’t working long-term, telling the creator of Andor that “streaming is dead.” Because of this, Lucasfilm seems to be focusing on making Star Wars movies again. The Mandalorian and Grogu already broke a seven-year gap between Star Wars films, and Star Wars: Starfighter is coming next May, with other movies also in the works.
While Lucasfilm isn’t leaving streaming altogether – a second season of Maul – Shadow Lord is planned – there aren’t any other live-action Star Wars shows officially confirmed after Ahsoka Season 2 arrives in early 2027. Though plans could change, Disney seems hesitant about the current streaming landscape, so new TV series aren’t a high priority (except possibly a third season of Ahsoka). Unless Disney sees a path to making streaming profitable again, a second season of The Acolyte is unlikely, even if the story isn’t finished or fans want more.
The story of The Acolyte doesn’t have to end here. Continuing the plot through novels or comics would be a logical next step, especially since the High Republic era is already well-established in books and comics. While it wouldn’t be quite the same as seeing the story on screen, it would offer fans a satisfying conclusion. Many Star Wars fans would also be excited to learn more about Plagueis through official published materials.
