Anthony Head Dies at 72

Anthony Head was born in London on February 20, 1954, and knew from a young age he wanted to be an actor – it was a family tradition. His father, Seafield Head, was a documentary filmmaker, and his mother, Helen Shingler, was an actress. His brother, Murray Head, is also an actor and musician. Like many London-based actors, Anthony Head started his career performing on stage, appearing in productions of Godspell, The Rocky Horror Show, and Rope.

Anthony Head’s career took off in the late 1990s when he landed the role of Rupert Giles in Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As Buffy’s watcher, Giles became a father figure and mentor to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character throughout the show’s seven seasons. Initially portrayed as a somewhat rigid librarian who relied on research, he developed over hundreds of episodes into a vital member of the core group – the “Scooby” gang – and wasn’t afraid to get involved in the action.

Even after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended, fans and creators often talked about a spin-off series focused on the character of Rupert Giles. This potential show, nicknamed ‘Ripper’ after a childhood moniker, never happened. However, Anthony Head, who played Giles, continued to bring the character to life by voicing him in Buffy the Vampire Slayer video games and even appearing as Giles in an episode of Robot Chicken.

Following his role on Buffy, Head remained active in film and television. He appeared in movies such as Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008), The Inbetweeners Movie, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. He also lent his voice to the animated film Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. On television, he continued to work on shows like the BBC series Manchild, took on various roles within the Doctor Who universe, and played King Arthur’s father in the BBC series Merlin.

Brendan Hunt played Rupert Mannion in the Apple TV+ comedy Ted Lasso, initially appearing in several episodes before becoming a major villain. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer particularly enjoyed this role because it allowed them to see Hunt play another ‘Rupert’ character – but this time one who was scheming and unpleasant, a complete opposite of his beloved character Giles.

This is a developing story, it will be updated.
