Cape Fear’s Javier Bardem Reveals The One Similarity His Max Cady Has With Robert De Niro

Characters like Hannibal Lecter, Darth Vader, the Wicked Witch of the West, and the Joker aren’t just famous movie villains – they’ve become ingrained in popular culture. Over time, these larger-than-life antagonists, initially known for specific, defining performances, have become coveted roles for actors eager to put their own spin on them. However, one truly great movie villain who hasn’t yet reached that iconic status is Max Cady from Cape Fear, a cunning criminal determined to get revenge on Sam Bowden.

The character, originally played by Robert Mitchum in the 1962 film, became truly famous thanks to Robert De Niro’s performance in the 1991 remake. Now, Javier Bardem, an Academy Award winner, is taking on the role in a new Apple TV series. When asked by ComicBook if he drew inspiration from De Niro’s portrayal, Bardem responded:

What struck me most was his ironic detachment and dark humor – he just didn’t seem to care about anything, not even his own well-being. The image of him lying under that truck really highlighted his invincibility. It felt like nothing could stop him, and that incredible determination was something you had to admire and support.

Javier Bardem Breaks Down Max Cady in Cape Fear

Javier Bardem’s performance as Max Cady in Cape Fear could cement his status as a master of villainous roles, following his Oscar-winning portrayal of Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men. While both characters are driven and violent, Bardem points out that they are very different, and he found each one presented unique challenges as an actor.

The actor believes the character in No Country for Old Men is essentially driven by nothing. He described him as having no conscience, no emotions, no plan, and no objective, portraying him simply as a force of nature – an unpredictable accident happening in the world.

“With great hair,” Bardem’s co-star Patrick Wilson added.

Bardem chuckled and complimented someone’s hair, then revealed his own was real, not a wig. He jokingly complained that the Coen brothers had made him wear a hairnet.

When comparing the two roles, Javier Bardem said he’d have more faith in the character Max Cady than in Anton Chigurh.

The first two episodes of Cape Fear are now streaming on Apple TV.
