Star Wars Revives Its Cancelled TV Show in The Mandalorian & Grogu

The Star Wars franchise has faced challenges for years. While it wasn’t always smooth sailing even when George Lucas was in charge – the negative reaction to the prequel films demonstrates that – things became considerably harder after Disney took over. The movies and TV shows experienced much more intense criticism, and the sequel trilogy, in particular, received a lot of negative feedback from fans.

Despite recent successes, Disney and Lucasfilm have increasingly been cancelling previously announced films and TV series. Several projects have been affected, including the planned Rogue Squadron movie by Patty Jenkins and Rian Johnson’s planned Star Wars trilogy. Unfortunately, other films like James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi and a sequel focusing on Rey, previously called New Jedi Order, may also be cancelled. Interestingly, the idea behind one cancelled project was partially revisited in the recent film, The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Star Wars Cancelled Rangers of the New Republic

In addition to several cancelled movies, the TV show Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic was also scrapped, disappointing many fans. The show would have taken place during the same period as The Mandalorian and followed the New Republic’s fight against the remaining Imperial forces, potentially featuring characters like Cara Dune and Carson Teva.

Disney reportedly cancelled the “Rangers of the New Republic” series after firing actress Gina Carano, who played Cara Dune. This decision followed significant online criticism of her social media posts and resulted in a lawsuit filed by Carano. As a result, there haven’t been any recent developments regarding the show, and it’s unlikely to be made. However, fans did get a glimpse of what the series might have been through elements included in “The Mandalorian and Grogu.”

The Mandalorian and Grogu Offers Audiences Part of This Story

Though the Rangers of the New Republic project appears to be cancelled, The Mandalorian and Grogu delivered a portion of that storyline. The movie primarily focused on Din Djarin and Grogu’s adventures, but it also showed us what the New Republic was doing to track down and capture remaining Imperial forces, as Din had committed to helping them in the season 3 finale of The Mandalorian.

The movie finally showed what life was like during the New Republic era and their struggle to fully defeat the Empire. Sigourney Weaver’s character, Colonel Ward, along with other important figures like Carson Teva and Zeb Orrelios, played a part in this depiction. While not as focused on New Republic rangers as the planned TV series would have been, this film came closer than anything before to illustrating this period and the challenges it presented.

This Still Doesn’t Totally Make Up For Rangers of the New Republic Being Cancelled

It was great to finally see this period of the Star Wars story on film and learn more about the struggle against the remains of the Empire. However, a common complaint about The Mandalorian & Grogu is that the trailers showed a lot more of the New Republic than the movie actually delivered. While Din Djarin did work with the New Republic, the hype about Grogu saving the galaxy feels misleading, and the New Republic wasn’t really a central part of the story.

Although Carson Teva, a key character from the New Republic, appeared in the movie, his part was surprisingly minor. The New Republic rangers didn’t become significantly involved until the very end, when they rescued Din and Grogu. In a way, The Mandalorian and Grogu is the closest Star Wars has come to realizing the vision of Rangers of the New Republic, but it doesn’t quite fill the void left by the cancelled TV series.
