Summer Game Fest showcased a lot of single-player games, including highly anticipated titles like Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and Resident Evil Veronica. But it wasn’t just the big names – smaller studios also made an impact. That’s No Moon, for example, revealed Crossfire, a new tactical shooter focused on storytelling.
If the title sounds familiar, that’s because this game is inspired by Smilegate’s popular shooter. However, this is a single-player story centered around Layla Qassem and Delroy Cross. Layla is on a secret mission in the Atlas Mountains when a dangerous, world-threatening force appears – essentially, zombies created by Snyder.
To stay alive, she reluctantly partners with Cross, a highly skilled operative she strongly disagrees with. This likely connects to the established factions – Global Risk and Black List – from the game, but despite their differences, they have no choice but to cooperate or face certain death.
A key feature of the game is Adaptive Cover, a system that changes how players use cover during gameplay. According to game director Jacob Minkoff, the character Layla automatically adjusts her position based on the surrounding environment and enemy locations, making it feel more realistic and giving players a new skill to learn and improve. This dynamic system aims to make the experience more immersive and engaging.
This likely means she’ll move and take cover realistically, adapting to what’s happening instead of just sticking to pre-defined spots and peeking. It’s a cool idea, but considering how Remedy’s previous game turned out, we’re going to wait and see how it actually plays before forming an opinion.
Crossfire is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC with a release date still pending.
