20 Years Later, One of The Greatest Shojo of All Time Returns With a New Release

The anime and manga world is constantly expanding, which often means older series fade from memory unless they continue with new releases. However, some series remain popular with fans, like Ai Yazawa’s Nana. First published in 2000 in Shueisha’s Cookie magazine, Nana quickly became a beloved classic of the Shojo genre. Yazawa is a highly respected manga artist, known for other popular works like I’m No Angel, Neighborhood Story, and Paradise Kiss. Fans were deeply affected when the manga went on indefinite hiatus in June 2009 after 84 chapters, due to the author’s illness. Despite this, Yazawa has remained involved with the series through illustrations and updates. In 2025, she announced plans to finish the story, which is nearing its conclusion, sparking excitement among fans. However, a release date is still awaited. In 2006, the renowned studio Madhouse created a 47-episode anime adaptation of Nana, but it also didn’t cover the entire story.

What Is Nana So Loved Even After All These Years?

I’m completely captivated by Nana! It’s just such a raw and honest look at what it’s really like to be young and navigate relationships. Forget those perfect love stories – this manga dives into the messy, complicated, and sometimes codependent side of love with characters who are beautifully flawed. The story follows two Nanas – Nana Osaki and Nana Komatsu – but honestly, that’s where their similarities end. They’re total opposites in almost every way, from their personalities to what they want out of life. It’s fascinating to watch their worlds collide!

Despite their different backgrounds, Osaki and Komatsu quickly became friends after a random encounter on a train and surprisingly ended up living together. Osaki was determined to become a punk rock singer, even if it meant breaking up with her boyfriend. Komatsu, on the other hand, is trusting and followed her boyfriend when he moved away from home. The story follows both girls as they navigate heartbreak and challenges, ultimately discovering who they truly are.
