HBO has a strong track record with fantasy television, and it looks like that will continue. While its first attempt, Carnivàle, was cut short after two seasons, Game of Thrones was a massive hit, though author George R.R. Martin believes it could have lasted even longer. Currently, House of the Dragon is planned to finish after four seasons, but this decision is being made by the show’s creator, Ryan Condal, and not by HBO itself.
Then there’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a more lighthearted prequel to Game of Thrones. Despite only having one season so far, many believe it’s currently HBO’s best fantasy series – on par with House of the Dragon. Unlike the original Game of Thrones, this show has the potential to run for a long time – potentially even ten seasons or more. Showrunner Ira Parker envisions telling many more stories focusing on the adventures of Dunk, a wandering knight, and Egg, his young squire (who is secretly Prince Aegon Targaryen). He recently shared a detailed plan for these future seasons with Decider.
I’d really like to create five stories featuring George as a young boy, nicknamed ‘Egg.’ It feels like a good time to do this while Dexter [Sol Ansell] is still young and his voice hasn’t broken yet. We’d follow him through those five stories, and then, at the end, he’d transition back into being a prince. The next few stories would move to different locations – places like Summerhall or King’s Landing, rather than just traveling. That’s the plan for the middle part of the series. And, of course, the final stories would focus on Egg as a king.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’ Plan Is Great – But Difficult To Pull Off

As a fantasy fan, I’d honestly be thrilled if they just managed to bring the first phase of Parker’s vision to life. We’ve seen far too many book-based fantasy series, like Netflix’s Shadow & Bone or Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time, get cut short before they could finish telling their stories. So, five seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms would be a really strong run. It’s interesting because Martin has only actually published three of these novellas so far, meaning the show would expand on the existing material. But the good news is he’s planning a total of twelve! And we know from his outlines that books four and five would take Dunk and Egg on adventures to Winterfell and the Riverlands – though the exact order is still up in the air.
More seasons would be fantastic, and creator George R.R. Martin has previously suggested 12 to 15 seasons for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This new approach seems more realistic – bringing the actors back for shorter bursts of a couple of seasons at a time, instead of requiring five-year commitments. While he understands that the young actors, Ansel and Peter Claffey, might become very successful, he’s hoping they’ll be able to return, as he doesn’t want to recast their roles. He explained that:
Everyone wants to pursue their own path, and I truly hope Peter and Dexter become major stars. I can easily see Dexter as the lead in a new Titanic movie, and Peter as the next James Bond. I’d be happy to revisit these roles occasionally, maybe do a film or two as their careers progress.
Parker points out, importantly, that HBO hasn’t been involved in these discussions yet. Hopefully, that will change soon, and they’ll be enthusiastic about the idea. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is already doing well on streaming, with Season 2 in production and a third season likely to happen. However, a longer run – 10, 12, or even 15 seasons – would be really valuable. It would be something special and allow the show to fully explore the characters’ stories. If the series doesn’t last that long, there’s a danger that we won’t get a satisfying conclusion to Dunk and Egg’s adventures, as there are many years of their lives still left to tell, and it would be fantastic to see that on HBO.
The second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is planned to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2027. You can currently watch the first season on HBO Max.
