Disney Confirms Pixar and Marvel Crossover for Major Anniversary Celebration

As a gamer, I’ve seen a lot of comic book crossovers, and sometimes one just clicks – it feels way more special than your average movie adaptation. This year’s celebration of Pixar reaching such a big milestone is definitely one of those times. It’s not just a tie-in; it feels really unique and well-done.

To celebrate Pixar’s 40th anniversary, Marvel Comics is releasing a series of special variant covers inspired by some of Pixar’s most popular movies.

You can expect to see many more fantastic comic book covers like that one this summer.

Marvel Variant Covers Honor Pixar’s Inside Out, Up, And More

Combining the worlds of The Fantastic Four and The Incredibles is a brilliant idea, and it makes you wonder which Pixar character could become as famous a hero as Iron Man. Artist Todd Nauck thinks WALL-E is a perfect fit! He’s featured alongside EVE on a special variant cover for Iron Man #7, which comes out on July 1.

A new cover for Avengers: Armageddon #2 will be released on July 15th. It’s a reimagining of the cover from The Avengers #9 (1963), which featured Wonder Man’s first appearance. Instead of Wonder Man, this new cover features Riley Andersen from the 2015 film Inside Out, surrounded by a bubble showing her emotions as characters.

Humberto Ramos offered a fun twist with his variant cover for Infernal Hulk #9. He cleverly combined the massive Marvel hero with Remy, the tiny chef from Pixar’s 2007 film Ratatouille.

The celebration continues in August, starting on the 5th, with a special variant cover for the current Fantastic Four comic series. Artist Nicoletta Baldari reimagines the cover of Fantastic Four #49 from 1966, replacing Galactus with the villainous Hopper and featuring the comic’s characters.

On August 5th, a special variant cover for Amazing Spider-Man #34 will be released. Artist Ryan Stegman’s artwork shows Spider-Man soaring to new heights, taking inspiration from the beloved 2009 film Up.

Two weeks after the announcement, artist Phil Noto revealed a variant cover for the third issue of Avengers: Armageddon. The cover features Merida, the skilled archer from the 2012 film Brave. The artwork’s style is inspired by Kelly Thompson’s Hawkeye comic series, which follows Kate Bishop, the successor to Clint Barton.

On August 19th, a new cover for Doomquest #4 by Paco Medina will be released, inspired by . The upcoming story featuring Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the toys battling modern technology will arrive in theaters on June 19th – two months prior.

To mark Pixar’s 40th anniversary this September, Marvel will release four special variant comic book covers. These will include new versions of Avengers: Armageddon #4, Fantastic Four #16, and Thor #801 on September 2nd, followed by a special X-Men #37 issue two weeks later. Marvel hasn’t yet revealed the artists creating the covers, which Pixar movies they’ll be inspired by, or which classic covers they’ll recreate.

Pixar started as part of Lucasfilm and was founded in Richmond, California, in 1986 by Edwin Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith. The studio became famous after releasing Toy Story in 1995 – the first full-length movie made entirely with computer-generated imagery. Since then, Pixar has become one of the most respected animation studios globally, earning critical acclaim and beloved by audiences everywhere.

Marvel starts releasing its Pixar 40th Anniversary variant covers on July 1.
