Over four decades later, the franchise is still thriving. This time, as a Netflix animated series.
Netflix gave fans their first look at the new Ghostbusters series on June 6th, including the show’s official logo. The series will be called Ghostbusters: Night Shift.
What to Expect From Ghostbusters: Night Shift?
Development on the series began in 2022, and after several years, it was announced in August 2024 following the release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
I’m so excited! I saw that Netflix is making a new Ghostbusters series! Sony Pictures Animation announced it on social media earlier this year, and they said it’s a comedy with a supernatural twist. I can’t wait to see it – it’s coming soon, apparently!
Netflix isn’t sharing many details about the new series yet, but they’ve described it as an original, hinting that Ghostbusters will be available to help with paranormal problems, even during off-hours.
The new animated series is being created by Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan, and executive produced by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan. The announcement of the series’ title was perfectly timed to coincide with Ghostbusters Day, which celebrates the 1984 release of the original film.
The new show is expected to have a similar feel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. The first glimpse of the logo reveals the classic Ghostbusters symbol, but with a ghost trapped inside the ‘no ghosts’ sign. This animated version of the ghost is colored black and yellow and has a single hand with yellow claws.
The new show, Ghostbusters: Night Shift, is the third animated series in the Ghostbusters franchise. It started with the original animated show that ran for seven seasons on ABC from 1986 to 1991, following the popularity of the first movie. A sequel series, Extreme Ghostbusters, then aired for one season on ABC in 1997.
What’s Next for the Ghostbusters Franchise?
The Ghostbusters franchise is consistently expanding, and there’s always more on the way. Beyond the previously announced animated show and the upcoming Ghostbusters: Night Shift, Netflix and Sony Animation are collaborating on another animated movie. While details are scarce, Kris Pearn signed on to work on the project in December 2024. Development for this animated film actually began as early as 2015.
Attempts to develop a new live-action movie have been made since 2014, with various directors and creative teams involved, including Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who worked on Project Hail Mary. However, there haven’t been any new developments since 2022.
Ghostbusters: Night Shift premieres on Netflix in 2027.
