A new Square Enix game is rumored to be in development, potentially reviving a beloved and highly-regarded RPG series. It’s been almost a decade since the last installment! The information comes from Nate the Hate, a well-known industry insider with a generally reliable history. While details are scarce, this news will excite fans who’ve been eagerly awaiting a new game in the series.
In 2017, PlatinumGames and Square Enix collaborated on NieR: Automata, a critically acclaimed RPG that brought a relatively unknown series into the mainstream. Given its success nearly a decade ago, many fans expected a sequel to be announced quickly. While a follow-up hasn’t materialized yet, that doesn’t mean it isn’t in development. 2021 saw the release of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139, but this was simply a remastered version of an older game. Reports suggest that a brand new installment in the main NieR series is currently being worked on, and has been for some time.

Nate the Hate claims he heard about a new NieR game being developed last year, but hasn’t received any updates since. It remains to be seen if PlatinumGames will be involved, as they only worked on Automata in the series and are currently focused on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin and Project G.G. PlatinumGames often has several projects in development simultaneously. Keep in mind this information is unconfirmed and could change, so it’s best to take it with a grain of salt.
