Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Team Used AI Used to “Iterate on Ideas Faster and More Efficiently”

Following confirmation that Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog used AI tools during the initial stages of developing Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Crystal Dynamics has publicly stated they did so to help their team explore and refine ideas more quickly and effectively.

The company confirmed that although AI helped create initial artwork, all the final art players will see in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis was made by human artists.

Crystal Dynamics is using AI to speed up the development process and help its teams work more efficiently. However, the studio emphasizes that all final content is still created by people. Their aim is to give developers the tools they need to make the best possible games for players worldwide.

The studio released a statement shortly after it was discovered, through the Steam page for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, that they had used generative AI during development. The studio explained in an “AI Generated Content Disclosure” section that these tools were used for initial exploration and as a temporary aid during the development process.

The developers used AI tools to help with initial ideas and create some temporary content. However, all AI-generated elements were either swapped out or improved by human artists and designers to ensure the final product matched their creative goals.

The studio revealed they used generative AI to create initial concept art and temporary assets during the game’s development, helping them explore level design and the game’s structure. However, Crystal Dynamics hasn’t shared many specifics about how they used these AI tools.

Generative AI is a hot topic in game development, and studios are divided on whether to use it. Some, like Arcanaut Studios (the team behind Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic), have stated they won’t use these tools at all. Others, such as NEOWIZ, the developer of Lies of P, are exploring AI to create visual references for their artists, but only for internal use.

Even major companies like PlayStation are exploring these tools, using them to improve quality assurance, and make 3D modeling and animation processes faster. Owlcat Games has also announced they’re using generative AI to create quick prototypes and temporary assets for their game, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn.

Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, has commented on generative AI, saying that while it has potential, it isn’t advanced enough to create a game as complex and large as Grand Theft Auto 6.

Following a previous discussion about how generative AI could be used, Zelnick clarified that AI tools alone can’t create truly great entertainment. He doesn’t believe there’s any evidence to suggest they ever will. Specifically regarding the development of GTA 6, he stated that generative AI isn’t being used at all. Rockstar Games is meticulously handcrafting the game’s world – building it piece by piece, from individual buildings to entire neighborhoods. This handcrafted approach is what sets their games apart and, in his opinion, is essential for creating high-quality entertainment.

The new Tomb Raider game, Legacy of Atlantis, is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It’s scheduled to be released on February 10, 2027.
