I was so saddened to hear about the passing of Patrick Godfrey, a familiar face from so many of my favorite shows. He was 93. You might remember him from Doctor Who, His Dark Materials, and a whole lot of other great projects. He’ll be missed!
Godfrey’s passing was announced on Friday 5 June, in a statement from his representatives.
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Patrick Godfrey, who died peacefully at his home last night with his family by his side. He was a truly gifted and wonderful actor, and will be greatly missed.
Throughout his extensive career, Godfrey appeared in over 150 films and television shows. He was well-known for his roles in popular movies like The Count of Monte Cristo, A Room with a View, Ever After, The Importance of Being Earnest, Les Misérables, and Mr. Turner.
He also had some well-remembered parts on television, notably in Doctor Who. He was in several episodes across two different stories: he played Tor in ‘The Savages’ in 1966 and Major Cosworth in ‘The Mind of Evil’ in 1971.
Beyond his role in Sherlock, he’s also been in shows like Doc Martin, His Dark Materials, and Casualty. He’s a versatile actor, lending his voice to video games such as BioShock 2 and the Red Dead Redemption series, and regularly performing on stage.

Godfrey and Walker have two children: their daughter, Kate, who directs voice work at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and their son, Richard.
Since Godfrey’s death was announced, fans have been paying tribute to him.
Someone posted on X (formerly Twitter) about the recent death of actor Patrick Godfrey. They remembered his excellent and understated performance in the 1987 film Maurice, based on the novel by E.M. Forster, calling it a personal favorite. Although he didn’t have many lines, his presence in the film was very impactful. They ended with a message of rest in peace.
I was so saddened to hear about the passing of Patrick Godfrey. He was brilliant as Leonardo Da Vinci in ‘Ever After,’ which is honestly one of my all-time favorite films. Rest in peace.
Someone commented that Patrick Godfrey was brilliant as Leonardo da Vinci in ‘Ever After,’ and they loved the creative portrayal of the Fairy Godmother. As a younger viewer, they especially appreciated seeing another strong mentor character and felt grateful for the film’s empowering message – they said it felt like the movie ‘gave us wings.’
