The 1979 film Alien is a truly exceptional movie. While George Lucas had recently energized science fiction with a grand space adventure, Ridley Scott took a different approach, crafting a terrifying and intensely claustrophobic story. Its famous tagline, “In space, no one can hear you scream,” perfectly captures the film’s atmosphere. Essentially a haunted house story, Alien replaces a haunted house with a deserted alien spaceship. But the ship isn’t empty—a deadly creature called a xenomorph comes aboard with the crew. Though set in space, the movie is at its core a horror film. Recently, one fan wondered what the story would be like if told from the alien’s perspective.
A user named Khan Noonien Singh shared an interesting take on the movie Alien. They pointed out that if you look at the story from the alien’s point of view, it’s surprisingly similar to Die Hard. The alien is isolated, everyone is trying to kill it—even a bearded man—and it’s navigating through the ship’s vents. Considering the company is Japanese, it’s almost like a Christmas setting for the creature.
The Connections Between Die Hard and Alien Are Spot-On
The post highlights some important aspects of the movie. When the Nostromo crew investigated the alien ship, someone foolishly disturbed the alien eggs, which had terrible consequences. They unknowingly brought an alien back to their ship, and that’s when the real nightmare began. The alien quickly emerged by violently bursting out of a crew member’s chest and then began to hunt them. From there, it became a desperate fight for survival as the crew tried to track down and destroy the creature, which fought back relentlessly.
This post offered a unique perspective: what if the alien in the movie was simply defending itself? While Die Hard centers on John McClane rescuing hostages and his wife from terrorists at the Nakatomi building, there’s a connection to the ship Nostromo, which belonged to the British-Japanese Weyland-Yutani Corporation – putting both stories within a corporate-owned setting. Interestingly, both McClane and the alien use the same tactic: crawling through ventilation shafts to surprise their opponents.
Iconic villains with beards include Arthur Dallas from Alien (played by Tom Skerritt) and Hans Gruber from Die Hard (played by the fantastic Alan Rickman). While the Christmas connection is a playful observation, there’s a real similarity: many horror and sci-fi films invite us to consider the villain’s perspective. In Alien, we see the creature as a newly born being simply trying to survive, and people are trying to kill it. It’s interesting to empathize with the alien, and the comparison to Die Hard really highlights this idea.
