A classic game originally released on PlayStation 1 in 1999 is being updated for modern consoles. Native versions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 will be available on October 22nd. A remake of the game was previously released on Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC in 2021, and is already playable on the newer consoles through backward compatibility. This marks the first time the game has been available on a Nintendo platform, while PlayStation fans will appreciate the return of a beloved title.
The scrolling shooter Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams first appeared in arcades in April 1991, developed by Success and Sega. It was later released for the TurboGrafx-CD and X68000 in 1993, and many players first experienced it with the 1999 PlayStation version – though that version was only available in Japan. In fact, aside from the TurboGrafx-CD release, the game never came to North America. After many years, a remake called Cotton Reboot was released in 2021 for Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4, developed by Rocket-Engine, ININ Games, and Beep. Now, Cotton Reboot is being released for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.
A Fan-Favorite Game on the PlayStation Store
The original Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams was a hit and well-received, especially in Japan, when it came out in the 1990s. The recent remake has also been very successful, scoring 81 on Metacritic, 4.75 out of 5 stars on the PlayStation Store, and 78% positive reviews on Steam. While the PlayStation Store score might be unusually high, possibly due to nostalgia, it’s clear the game is popular with players.
I’m so excited about this remake! Not only do the graphics look amazing and updated, but they’ve also given the music a fresh spin. The best part is, if you’re like me and love the original soundtrack, you can still enjoy that version too – they’ve included it! It’s a win-win for everyone.
Players who want the PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions of this game will need to pay $40. The game itself is relatively short, taking most players between one and three hours to finish. Those aiming for 100% completion can expect to spend around five hours. Many reviewers feel the price is high considering the game’s length, which has impacted its user scores.
Just wanted to say, I’m always excited to hear what you guys think, so please leave a comment! And if you’re into video games – especially the classics – come chat with other fans on the ComicBook Forum. It’s a great place to talk about everything we love!
