Throughout the series, Adam ultimately accepted his fate and transformed into He-Man, the most powerful being in the universe. Surprisingly, he learned the Power Sword wasn’t the source of his strength—the power resided within him. While past defenders of Grayskull relied solely on brute force, Adam’s combination of strength and kindness made him the rightful wielder of the power.

The latest take on Masters of the Universe highlights compassion as Adam’s greatest strength, even extending to his enemy, Skeletor. There’s a charming scene where he surprisingly offers Skeletor a peaceful conversation, treating him as an equal. While Skeletor refuses, this moment demonstrates why He-Man stands out among Eternia’s heroes. More subtly, Adam’s kindness also suggests a hidden darkness connected to the power of Grayskull.

Is There More To Skeletor Than a Skull For a Face?

The other heroes probably would have been shocked that Adam tried to reason with Skeletor, but the movie hinted at this earlier when Adam surprised Teela by attempting to understand Skeletor’s motivations. Living on Earth had taught Adam to be empathetic, and he wanted to defeat Skeletor not with force, but by reaching out and potentially making him a friend. Teela was taken aback by this idea, simply reminding Adam that Skeletor looks like a villain – a skull-faced one at that – and that’s all there is to it.

It turns out she was right, but the real significance of that moment lies in what happens visually. As they speak, the characters fly past Castle Grayskull, and this isn’t a coincidence. Teela argues that Skeletor’s skull-like face makes him unempathetic, and that idea is intentionally linked to the image of Grayskull – a castle shaped like a skull. This raises an interesting question: if Skeletor is considered evil because of his appearance, why is Grayskull, with its similar design, seen as a force for good?

I’ve been thinking about Masters of the Universe, and it’s not hitting the themes over the head, which I appreciate. It’s more subtle, hinted at through what happens and when. We all knew Teela’s prediction about Skeletor would come true – he’s just pure evil! But the show really makes you question Grayskull itself. Is there something dark hidden within it? To me, it felt like she was saying Eternia’s history was all wrong, that pure power isn’t enough and that you need compassion to truly be a hero. It’s a fascinating twist on the usual ‘good versus evil’ story.

It’s easy to see Masters of the Universe as a straightforward story of good versus evil, but the Sorceress’s choice of Adam challenges that idea. She thinks dividing the world into purely good and evil is too simplistic. When you add Teela’s observation that the villains literally have skulls for faces, it raises a fascinating question: maybe the power of Grayskull hasn’t always been used for purely good purposes, as we initially believed.

The history of Grayskull is complex within the world of Masters of the Universe (and a new version is being shown in the Sword of Flaws series). However, concentrating all universal power in one location feels inherently threatening. Considering everything, Masters of the Universe may be hinting at a surprisingly grim backstory.
