Nintendo Switch Online is about to see its biggest update in years. Since it first launched, the service hasn’t changed much, and while some expected improvements with the release of the new Switch console, those didn’t materialize. The only significant additions have been retro consoles and games for the Classic Games Library, like those from the N64 and GameCube. Because changes have been so infrequent, this upcoming update is particularly important.
A dataminer exploring recent Nintendo Switch Online updates discovered that the apps for classic NES, SNES, and Game Boy games have been significantly updated. According to the dataminer, Yakumono, Nintendo has added challenges similar to those found in the game NES Remix, but these challenges aren’t currently playable.
Additional Details on New Nintendo Switch Online Update
Beyond what we’ve already seen, the discovered game files suggest these challenges currently apply to individual games, not all of them. However, it seems the intention is to eventually expand challenges to cover the entire game library. The files also include instructions for accessing these challenges through the Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) Home Menu app, but that app doesn’t currently have a section for them. This suggests the feature is still under development and hasn’t been fully released yet.
This information comes directly from the data included in the newest Nintendo Switch Online update, following a recent game addition. It’s a straightforward look at what’s been added to the service’s files, not a rumor or guess. However, it’s still unofficial, so it’s best to view it with some caution. This data could represent features Nintendo has abandoned, or things they’re still developing that might never be released.
This new system takes inspiration from NES Remix, a series Nintendo created for the Wii U. NES Remix offered quick, challenging levels using classic NES games, and it also included creatively altered versions of those games to offer a fresh experience.
Nintendo hasn’t officially responded to the recent leak about its Nintendo Switch Online service or the discussions it’s sparked. The company usually doesn’t comment on leaks or rumors, and we don’t expect that to change. However, we’ll update this article if Nintendo does make a statement.
All of that said, and as always, feel free to drop a comment or two with your thoughts on this new leak, or join the video game conversations currently happening on the ComicBook Forum.
