Forget Rip, This Dutton Ranch Character Is Keeping Even Bigger Secrets From Beth

Warning: SPOILERS for Dutton Ranch Season 1, Episode 5 – “Peaceful Find Peace”

In episode 5 of Dutton Ranch, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) finally shared a long-held secret with Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly). However, another character is keeping even more significant secrets from them both. After losing their cattle to foot-and-mouth disease, both Rip and Beth began working at the 10-Petals Ranch.

In the latest episode of Dutton Ranch, Rip revealed to Beth that he’d found a body on their property. He’d actually discovered the body of Wes Ayers (Nakoa DeCoite) during the season’s first episode, but kept it secret. Rip stored the body and later disposed of it by throwing it into an old mine shaft.

When Rip took over as foreman at 10-Petals Ranch, he discovered a ranch hand named Wes Ayers was missing. Wheeler realized the body he’d found must be Wes, though he still doesn’t know who killed him or the reason why. Finally, Rip told Beth everything, relieving himself of the heavy secret he’d been carrying.

Carter Is Keeping Huge Secrets From Beth & Rip In Dutton Ranch

As a movie lover, I’m really getting invested in the drama unfolding with Carter! It turns out Beth and Rip have no clue about all the trouble he’s been getting into – things like run-ins with the law, which he’s kept hidden. And to make things even more complicated, Sheriff Wade knows a lot more about their adopted son than they realize. It’s setting up a really tense situation, and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out!

Since the start of the conflict at Dutton Ranch, Carter has been arrested and held by Sheriff Wade on two occasions. The first time was when he intervened in a fight at the rodeo to protect Oreana Jackson. He was arrested again after Sheriff Wade raided the ranch of Carter’s friend, Dwight White, resulting in Dwight’s death.

Carter has a history of trouble – he’s been to jail twice and first met Dwight because he wasn’t going to school. He’s been absent from Rio Paloma High for weeks, and has been dishonest with Beth and Rip about where he is, choosing to spend time with Dwight instead. He’s even brought Oreana into their circle.

Carter saw Sheriff Wade murder Dwight unlawfully. Wade claimed Dwight attacked him with a knife, but Carter knew his friend was unarmed when he was killed. Wade forced Carter to support his false story, ensuring Carter’s silence by threatening him with imprisonment.

At the end of the fifth episode of Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip are unaware of what Carter is going through. Carter is keeping a secret life from them while trying to figure out what he wants for his future. He appreciates everything Beth and Rip have done for him, but he also needs to forge his own path. However, the things he’s hiding are significant and he won’t be able to keep them hidden forever.

How Beth’s New Dutton Ranch Job Changes Carter & Oreana

By the end of episode 5 of Dutton Ranch, Carter still doesn’t know that Beth and Rip are working at 10-Petals Ranch. Following Rip’s example, Beth convinced Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) to partner with her, allowing them to supply black angus steaks to upscale customers.

It seems Carter is benefiting from Beth and Rip trying to get on Beulah Jackson’s good side. Oreana and her grandmother aren’t close, and Beulah has punished Oreana by requiring a chaperone whenever she wants to visit Carter outside of their home, 10-Petals.

As Beth and Rip become closer to Beulah, Beulah will likely approve of Oreana and Carter being together. Currently, Oreana and Carter’s relationship is complicated, similar to Romeo and Juliet. Although the Jacksons and Dutton-Wheelers haven’t had a formal feud, they’ve recently formed a friendly partnership.

As the season progresses on Dutton Ranch, Carter’s hidden past is likely to be revealed. It’s unclear how Beth and Rip will deal with his rebellious behavior, legal troubles, and the fact that he saw a murder. While Carter is grieving the loss of his friend Dwight, Beth and Rip may simply attribute his bad mood to typical teenage angst.
