Despite ongoing challenges at the box office, The Mandalorian and Grogu has earned $294 million worldwide. While this isn’t a major success for the Star Wars franchise after a seven-year theatrical break, it’s surpassed the total earnings of the poorly-received Solo. The film is on track to become the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie ever, and it may also be the first to earn less than $200 million domestically in the U.S.
Despite some challenges, the film is performing better than The Marvels, which only earned $206 million and became the lowest-grossing movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s also surpassed Disney’s John Carter ($284 million) as it approaches $300 million in earnings. John Carter, a 2012 science fiction film based on the novel A Princess of Mars, was intended to launch a new franchise for Disney, but it failed to gain traction due to poor reviews and its high production cost (over $250 million). That’s something The Mandalorian and Grogu can be happy about!
What The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Box Office Means For The Future

Okay, let’s be real: the box office numbers for The Mandalorian and Grogu haven’t been great. It’s definitely underperformed, and there are plenty of people quick to say this proves Star Wars is finally losing its magic. Disney will probably have to do some serious number-crunching to try and spin it as a success – unless you conveniently forget Solo, of course. But honestly, I don’t think this is the end of the saga. It’s a stumble, sure, but not a fatal blow to a galaxy far, far away.
Despite some concerns, the movie is likely to perform well enough for Disney. The production budget was reasonably low, around $166 million before tax credits, and marketing cost an estimated $130 million. Beyond ticket sales, the film benefits from promotions with companies like Burger King and Volkswagen, plus revenue from home viewing, streaming, and importantly, merchandise. Grogu, a popular character from the Star Wars universe, is already a huge seller of merchandise, and this film is expected to boost those sales even further.
Despite not being the triumphant comeback some expected, the future of Star Wars looks promising. Discussions are already underway for a sequel to The Mandalorian and Grogu, or potentially a fourth season of The Mandalorian, with Brendan Wayne anticipating his return. Looking ahead to theatrical releases, Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, is slated for 2027. This film appears to be a larger-scale event, and with the 50th anniversary of Star Wars being celebrated – including a re-release of the original film – it could be the blockbuster the franchise needs to regain momentum.
You can now see The Mandalorian and Grogu in cinemas. Star Wars: Starfighter will be released on May 27, 2027.
