A hugely popular stealth game from the late 90s and early 2000s is getting a modern update later this year. While games like Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell defined the stealth genre at the time, this particular title was also incredibly influential. After being largely untouched for over a decade, it’s now set to make a comeback.
Nightdive Studios announced today that they’re remastering the classic stealth game Thief: The Dark Project. Originally released in 1998 by Looking Glass Studios, Thief was a groundbreaking title and received critical acclaim. It heavily influenced later games like Dishonored and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay. While Thief went on to have two sequels – Thief 2: The Metal Age and Thief: Deadly Shadows – many fans still consider the original The Dark Project to be the best in the series.
Nightdive Studios is remastering Thief: The Dark Project for modern consoles and PC. The game is scheduled to release in Winter 2026 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. An initial trailer showcasing the remastered version has also been released and can be viewed below.
Nightdive Studios has a strong history of successfully remastering classic games – including titles like Quake, Star Wars: Dark Forces, The Thing, System Shock 2, and Heretic – and all have been well-received. Because of this, there’s good reason to expect that Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will be excellent, and likely the best way to experience this beloved stealth game.
We don’t have a specific release date for Thief: The Dark Project Remastered yet, but expect to hear more details in the coming months. We’ll share any new information about the game right here on ComicBook as soon as it’s available.
