Update #2 [Mon 8th Jun 2026, 6:15pm]:
To wrap things up, last week’s State of Play broadcast was a huge success for Sony, becoming their second most-watched livestream of all time. It surpassed the viewership of their previous PS Showcases and the event held before the PS5 launched.
As of today, the recent State of Play presentation has been viewed over five million times.
Okay, so I was checking out the numbers, and apparently the only livestream that’s been watched more than this one is the PlayStation 5 reveal from June 2020. That thing got a crazy 15 million views! It’s gonna be really tough for anything to top that anytime soon, honestly.
Based on early views, the trailers for Marvel’s Wolverine and God of War Laufey are likely to be the most popular videos released this week, aside from E3. However, tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct presentation might change that, as it could reveal some exciting new content.
Here’s the latest update [Thursday, June 4th, 2026, 6:15 PM]: We’re seeing more information about this week’s State of Play presentation, which became the most-watched one ever.
The livestream reached a peak of three million viewers, breaking all previous records for viewership, according to Steam Charts.
The recent YouTube video is now more popular than last year’s PlayStation Showcase, and it’s quickly gaining views compared to the PlayStation Showcases from 2023 and 2020.
This live broadcast is shaping up to be one of PlayStation’s biggest successes, second only to their PS5 reveal event.
I was a little disappointed with last week’s poll results – only 36% of you thought yesterday’s State of Play would be the most-watched one ever. I really believed it would break the record and I would have bet on it!
(In fact, I wish I had now.)
The June 2026 presentation quickly surpassed all previous viewership records, reaching 4.2 million views in less than 12 hours. It’s on track to become the most-watched presentation yet, soon surpassing the 2021 PlayStation Showcase and likely exceeding the 2023 Showcase as well.
This broadcast is on track to become the most-watched PlayStation presentation ever, surpassing all previous streams except for the original PlayStation 5 reveal events in 2020. It might even become more popular than one of those earlier reveals.
Before yesterday, the February 2026 State of Play was the most popular, earning 3.4 million views. The series is clearly becoming more and more successful and has become Sony’s primary way of sharing news and updates.
Regardless of what you thought of yesterday’s presentation, it’s clear the company running it has perfected this type of event. Ultimately, success depends on the games they show and what viewers expect, but these broadcasts are polished, move at a good pace, and respect your time.
Yesterday’s State of Play wasn’t the most amazing presentation ever, but it was still really good and showed off a lot of games I’m excited about. Plus, after a deep dive into Phantom Blade Zero, we’ll likely see another broader State of Play in September.
Things have really changed since the traditional E3 events. Now that there are gaming showcases throughout the year, there’s less pressure to reveal everything at a single show. I believe this is why Sony held back on announcing ‘Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet’ for a while – constantly revealing new things can become excessive.
I think Sony has perfected the State of Play format and how it’s presented. Now, it all depends on the games and announcements they show in the future. It’s impossible to satisfy everyone, but I’m glad to see the series continuing to improve and gain popularity.
