Bruce Banner, played by Mark Ruffalo, hasn’t had a particularly complex story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, largely because of a legal issue between Universal and Marvel Studios that prevented him from getting his own movies. While limited, the filmmakers behind Avengers: Endgame showed Banner making a big change: he combined his two personalities into a single, always-intelligent “Smart Hulk.” This change wasn’t popular with everyone, as some fans felt it removed the internal struggle that made the character interesting. Now, with Banner’s return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day – and hints from leaked merchandise – it seems Marvel is undoing the Endgame transformation, potentially bringing back the original, more conflicted Hulk.
A recently revealed description of the second trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day includes a conversation between Peter Parker and Bruce Banner. Peter asks if Banner has figured out how to control mutated DNA, specifically if it’s possible to get rid of unwanted effects while keeping the helpful ones. Banner responds by questioning whether it’s right to label any part of nature as inherently ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ This line sheds light on the twist from Endgame, suggesting Banner fully integrated the Hulk because he came to believe there was nothing wrong with any aspect of his biology. This idea aligns with his explanation in Endgame, where he explained he initially tried to ‘cure’ the Hulk, but eventually realized the Hulk was actually a benefit, not a disease.
The Leaked Spider-Man: Brand New Day Dialogue Raises New Questions

Bruce Banner’s recent explanation of his Hulk transformations seems to fit with the creation of Smart Hulk in Avengers: Endgame, but it creates a problem for his current situation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Bruce now sees his gamma mutation as a natural part of himself, why does he still need a device to hold back the Savage Hulk? By actively suppressing the Hulk, he’s acting like he did before Endgame, viewing the Hulk as a dangerous problem to be eliminated. The new bracelets seen in trailers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day suggest that becoming Smart Hulk wasn’t a permanent fix, or that the idea had problems from the start, and Bruce now needs a different way to control his transformations.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been following all the buzz about Bruce Banner and the Hulk, and it’s been wild. All those whispers, leaks, and even toys hinting at the classic Hulk, or even a brand new grey version, probably stem from the fact that Bruce has been trying to control the Hulk. It’s been confusing! Hopefully, the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie will help untangle things a bit. We first saw Bruce back as a human after Endgame in Shang-Chi, but then in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, he was back to being the Smart Hulk again. It’s a lot to keep track of, honestly!
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to release in theaters on July 31st.
