This year, one of the most anticipated releases from Absolute Universe is the comic book Absolute. Although it started as a continuation of Absolute Batman, Absolute is already getting its own spin-off series, giving fans even more to enjoy.
I’m so excited – Cassandra Cain is getting her own one-shot comic! It’s called Absolute Cassandra Cain: The Shadow’s Hand #1, and I can’t wait to see what happens!
This comic book explores the beginnings of a skilled, young assassin and how her life connects to that of Selina Kyle (Catwoman). The story, found in Absolute Cassandra Cain: The Shadow’s Hand #1, will also share new details about a character first introduced in Absolute Batman #15.
Long ago, the Joker received training from the League of Assassins, but ultimately killed them all. From the aftermath emerged Lady Shiva and her daughter, Cassandra Cain. The first issue of Absolute Cassandra Cain: The Shadow’s Hand tells the story of how Cassandra Cain became the Absolute Universe’s deadliest assassin, and reveals a connection between her past and the world-famous thief, Selina Kyle!
Absolute Cassandra Cain: The Shadow’s Hand #1 is set to be published between the release of issues #3 and #4 of its miniseries predecessor. Che Grayson, with Absolute Batman author and Absolute Universe overseer Scott Snyder, pens the one-shot herself.
Okay, so the artist who did the amazing artwork for Absolute Catwoman, Bengal, is doing the main cover for the Absolute Cassandra Cain collection. But the actual one-shot comic itself is illustrated by Matias Bergara, and he also did that variant cover you see up there. I recognize his name – he’s the guy who worked with Simon Spurrier on Coda from Boom! Studios, which was a really cool apocalyptic fantasy. He also did Step By Bloody Step with Image Comics, another story about a young woman dealing with some seriously tough, violent stuff.
Scott Snyder Previously Teased Absolute Cassandra Cain’s Debut
, in its first issue, just as Scott Snyder once hinted at. He never specified in which Absolute Universe title she would appear during his May 2026 interview for the ComicPop Returns channel on YouTube, but the six-issue limited series was almost immediately recognized as a prime suspect.
This popular character was created by Kelley Puckett and Damion Scott, debuting in DC Comics’ Batman #567 in 1999. Initially, she was portrayed as a lifelong-trained bodyguard for Ra’s al Ghul, the immortal leader of the League of Assassins. Later, she used her incredible fighting skills to become a hero, joining the Bat-Family and taking over the role of Batgirl from Barbara Gordon.
Cassandra Cain was the first Batgirl to star in her own comic book series. She later fought crime under different names, including Kasumi and Black Bat. While she’s the third character to be known as Batgirl in this universe – following Barbara Gordon’s debut as a Gotham City police officer in Absolute Batman #1 – she eventually joined the team of Absolute Robins, who first appeared in issue nineteen of the popular series.
Absolute Cassandra Cain: The Shadow’s Hand #1 hits the shelves Sept. 9.
