A recently added movie is quickly becoming popular on HBO Max. Viewers have been discovering and enjoying it since it joined the streaming service’s collection late last month.
The action-adventure movie, a reboot of , wasted no time making its way onto the Top 10 Movies chart after arriving on HBO Max on May 24. As of June 9, Tomb Raider is the No. 2 movie on HBO Max in the United States, according to FlixPatrol.
For the past week, Tomb Raider has been consistently ranked second or third, but hasn’t been able to unseat Contagion from the number one spot. Rounding out the top five are Miss You, Love You at number five, A History of Violence at number four, and Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs. That’s the Weight of the World) at number three.
Alicia Vikander Replaced Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft
The action-adventure movie Tomb Raider came out in 2018, marking a fresh start for the film series after a 15-year gap. Alicia Vikander took on the iconic role of Lara Croft, following Angelina Jolie who previously played her in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and its sequel, The Cradle of Life (2003). The movie is based on the recent reboot of the popular Tomb Raider video game trilogy.
The movie Tomb Raider follows Lara Croft as she travels to the last place her father was known to be, determined to uncover what happened to him. The film draws heavily from the 2013 Tomb Raider video game, and also incorporates ideas from the 2015 game, Rise of the Tomb Raider.
Dominic West co-starred as Lara’s archeologist father, Lord Richard Croft, with Walton Goggins playing a rival archeologist named Mathias Vogel, who is also a member of the shadowy organization Trinity. The cast also featured Daniel Wu, Kristin Scott Thomas, Derek Jacobi, Hannah John-Kamen, and Nick Frost.
Tomb Raider was a modest box office hit, grossing $275 million worldwide against an estimated $100 million budget. While not the best return on investment, it reportedly reached its break-even point, giving Warner Bros. and MGM enough confidence to move ahead with a sequel.
The initial plan for a sequel to Tomb Raider, with Amy Jump writing and Ben Wheatley directing, didn’t work out. The COVID-19 pandemic caused delays that ultimately led to both Jump and Wheatley leaving the project.
Misha Green was brought in to write and direct the follow-up film. Unfortunately, the project was canceled before production could start when MGM lost the rights to it in 2022.
Prime Video Is Behind the New Live-Action Tomb Raider
However, in a twist of fate, MGM’s sister company, Amazon Studios (now Amazon MGM Studios), announced in 2023 that it had teamed up with new rights holders, Story Kitchen and Legendary Entertainment, and was developing a live-action Tomb Raider series for Prime Video.
Three years later, , with Sophie Turner becoming . While plot details remain under wraps, the actor previously told the LA Times that the series was “about her and her story and what drives her, rather than what so many people also love about her, which is how hot she is in the games and the movies.”
The actor added, “But I really want to show the other side. She’s so unashamedly capable. She is not a woman who hides her strengths at all.”
Tomb Raider is available to stream on HBO Max.
