Ahead of its final season, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is gaining popularity on demand. FlixPatrol data shows it’s currently the ninth most popular show on the Apple TV Store in both the United States and Canada.
This increase happens right after… Paramount had already revealed that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will end with a shorter fifth season, and filming for it is already finished.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Surges Ahead of New Season
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a prequel to the original Star Trek series. This show, available on Paramount+, follows Captain Christopher Pike, Spock, and Number One as they travel the galaxy and discover new worlds before Captain Kirk takes command of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stood out by bringing back the classic, self-contained episode format that many fans remember. Recent Star Trek shows on streaming, like Discovery and Picard, had favored longer, connected storylines. This shift allowed Strange New Worlds to offer a mix of big, exciting adventures alongside smaller, character-driven stories and even some humor.
It appears Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been a success. The show boasts a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating strong critical acclaim. While audience scores are a bit lower at 70%, that’s largely due to issues with the most recent season, which was impacted by the 2023 writers’ strike, as acknowledged by the show’s creators.
Will Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Get a Sequel?
As a huge Trek fan, I’ve been really excited about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It actually started as a spin-off from season two of Discovery, and it’s being brought to life by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet. Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers are running the show as showrunners. What’s amazing is they brought back Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn – I loved them in Discovery! – and they’re joined by a fantastic new cast including Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Bruce Horak, and Martin Quinn. It’s shaping up to be something special!
Many fans were sad to hear that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will conclude after five seasons. However, they’re grateful for those extra six episodes, which will give the writers a chance to finish the story and tie up loose ends. The show has gradually brought in more characters from the original Star Trek, including a guest appearance by Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk, and Season 5 will complete that connection.
With the talented cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, many fans hoped for a follow-up series showing Captain Kirk’s first experiences commanding the Enterprise, bridging the gap to the original Star Trek. This potential show, once called Star Trek: Year One, was something the creators wanted to pursue. However, recent decisions and suggest that Paramount’s new leadership is planning to end Star Trek‘s run on streaming services and concentrate on different projects.
