In Hollywood, it’s common for successful movies to get sequels, and this is particularly true for horror films – many classics have spawned entire franchises. Sometimes, though, those sequels take a long time to materialize. Now, a highly-regarded horror film from the 2010s, which had a sequel planned, is finally moving forward with some exciting news for fans.
A follow-up to the 2015 horror film It Follows, titled They Follow, was first announced in 2023. We recently received updates when Maika Monroe, who starred in the original, confirmed it was her next project. Now, the film is gaining even more momentum. According to Deadline, Naomi Ackie, known for her role in Mickey 17, is in final negotiations to star alongside Monroe in the new film, directed by David Robert Mitchell. While details about Ackie’s character and the plot are still under wraps, the sequel will take place ten years after the events of It Follows. Production is slated to begin this summer.
This Casting Update Is The Biggest News Yet For the It Follows Sequel
Released in 2014, It Follows is widely considered one of the most impressive horror movies of the 2010s. Directed and written by David Robert Mitchell, the film centers on Jay, a college student who becomes haunted by a terrifying, supernatural being after a casual encounter. This entity, visible only to her, takes the form of different people and relentlessly pursues Jay and her friends. The curse can only be transferred to another person through sexual intimacy. Despite a small budget of $1.3 million, the film was a commercial and critical success, praised for its unique and genuinely frightening story.
With how original and unsettling It Follows was, everyone’s eager to see if the sequel, They Follow, can live up to the hype. The announcement of the sequel in 2023 was exciting, and confirmation earlier this year from Monroe that it was actually happening was a relief. Now, with more cast members confirmed and a general location set, the project feels even more concrete – and it has the potential to be even scarier than the first film. Monroe has even hinted that They Follow will be truly disturbing, describing it as a “15 or 16” on a scale of 1 to 10 for how messed up it is.
They Follow doesn’t yet have a release date, though production is expected to begin this summer.
