Gypsy Rose Blanchard is looking back at a terrifying night.
Almost three years after getting out of prison, the reality TV personality opened up about the night in 2015 when her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, tragically killed her mother, Claudine “Dee Dee” Blanchard.
Oh my gosh, you guys, listening to Blanchard talk about it on Paul C. Brunson’s podcast, We Need to Talk, just sent chills down my spine! She described hearing this awful, awful screaming – she kept repeating it, like it was burned into her memory. It wasn’t just the sound, she said, it was the sheer shock of it all. Honestly, I could practically feel what she felt just hearing her describe it. It was so haunting!
Okay, so Lizzie… she remembered her mom asking this guy, Godejohn, who he was. And it’s just… chilling. Because Godejohn actually said that in court, and even other inmates confirmed he’d been talking about it! It’s like every piece of evidence just fits, and it’s horrifying to think about. She’s been through so much, eight years already, for helping with this… and she still remembers these details. It’s just… wow. It confirms everything I’ve been following with this case.
“She had asked, ‘Who are you,’” Blanchard said, “and he responded, ‘I am death.’”
She recalled hearing someone call her name. She said she desperately wanted to help, but was frozen with fear, completely unable to move.
Blanchard mentioned she and her mother had planned a relaxing evening earlier, deciding to paint their nails and watch a movie together.
I really wanted the evening to be special, something I’d remember fondly about her,” Blanchard explained. “We had dinner, and then I painted her nails while she did mine. We chose a movie and relaxed. She drifted off to sleep a little later, and then I did too.

After waking up, she texted Godejohn, someone she’d known for three years, to let him know her mother was asleep. She later remembered that as soon as he arrived, his first words were, ‘She’s dead.’
He then ordered Blanchard to go into the bathroom.
Honestly, when she said that – about locking the door and curling up, hands over her ears – it just destroyed me. It was like, I felt it so deeply, you know? Like I was right there with her, needing to protect myself from…everything. It was heartbreaking, but also, somehow, so incredibly relatable. I immediately understood that feeling of wanting to just disappear and shut out the world. It’s stuck with me ever since.
Blanchard was stunned by the murder, telling Brunson he never believed the person would actually go through with it until it did.
After her mother died, Blanchard admitted guilt to second-degree murder and received a 10-year prison sentence. Godejohn was found guilty of first-degree murder and will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of release.

Since being released from prison in 2023, Blanchard has prioritized her well-being and caring for her 18-month-old daughter, Aurora, with her fiancé, Ken Urker. She’s also preparing to one day explain her past conviction to her daughter.
She revealed on the 2025 episode of Gypsy Rose: Life After Lockup that she’s worried about telling her daughter about her past actions. She simply hopes her daughter will still love and forgive her.
Blanchard emphasized that she isn’t a bad person, and she doesn’t want her daughter, Aurora, to believe she is.
