As a lifelong Spielberg fan, I was thrilled to see him revisit the idea of alien life after all these years! It’s been almost 50 years since ‘Close Encounters,’ and his new film, which just hit UK cinemas, is a welcome return to that fascinating world.
Disclosure Day centers on Daniel Kellner, played by Josh O’Connor, who reveals a massive cover-up of alien visits to Earth. He teams up with TV weather presenter Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt), who seems to have a strange link to the extraterrestrials, to expose the truth.
Eve Hewson, who plays Daniel’s girlfriend Jane Blankenship in the film, also stars. Both Hewson and O’Connor recently told TopMob that working on the movie made them consider the possibility that aliens could actually exist.

When asked if she’d researched aliens before joining the project, Hewson said, ‘I wouldn’t say I was obsessed with the idea, but I was definitely open to discussing it and considering any possibilities.’
I’d seen a few documentaries before and thought they were interesting, but this movie really sparked my curiosity and pulled me into learning more. Now I’m completely fascinated!
O’Connor shared that he used to be skeptical about the possibility of life on other planets, much like his fellow actor, admitting he was once unsure about its existence.
He admitted he doesn’t have much expertise on the topic, but expressed his belief that it’s improbable we’re the only intelligent life in the universe.
I remember when he started working on Disclosure Day, he quickly became totally immersed in the topic. It wasn’t long before he was really digging deep and learning everything he could!
He recalled a strong memory from the week before filming began. They were in New York, and he’d invited Eve for dinner. He described having a wall covered with research materials and sketches, and when Eve saw it, she was shocked, jokingly comparing it to a crime scene and asking what all the chaos was about.
That’s how far my interest went,” he said. “It’s easy to get completely absorbed in the topic, and Steven knows so much about it that it really makes you see things differently.
In the movie, Hewson portrays a woman who once trained to be a nun and is now questioning her religious beliefs. The film explores whether believing in aliens and religion can coexist, a theme Hewson herself was eager to explore.
She believes this explains why many people are skeptical about unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs.
I believe religion can sometimes prevent us from fully considering new ideas. I really appreciate that my character challenges these concepts in the film, and her journey to a final understanding is a fantastic part of the story for me. It’s very rewarding!
Disclosure Day follows a whistleblower who’s trying to expose a huge government cover-up. They’re in a desperate race against time to reveal the truth about aliens, an event that promises to change everything for humanity.
Disclosure Day is now showing in UK cinemas.
