After giving fans some time to process the finale, The Boys creator Eric Kripke has discussed the response to how the show ended. He told TVLine that he has been following the online reactions—even though he admits it’s not a healthy habit. While acknowledging that many viewers are unhappy, Kripke emphasized that everyone is entitled to their opinion and that he stands by the story he wanted to tell, even if it didn’t satisfy everyone.
The Boys Creator Responds to Finale Backlash
Kripke said he’s happy people are genuinely invested in his work. He believes that even negative reactions, like arguments or dislike, show a level of passion, and that’s ultimately what he aims for – to evoke a strong response from the audience.
It’s good that he’s responding with some politeness, considering the strong reactions. Fans pointed out that promotional material for the final season showed major locations like Vought Tower destroyed, and suggested Homelander was gearing up for a violent rampage. However, when the finale actually aired, Homelander only killed one character – and that death happened off-screen. This character was widely seen as a parody of Elon Musk.
The episode concludes with Vought Tower and the company still standing, and many of its superpowered individuals remaining active. While some viewers felt this ending meant none of the events had lasting impact, it actually mirrors the storyline in the original comics. Furthermore, it’s a deliberate reflection of how, in real life, significant events often don’t lead to meaningful change.
Kripke also pointed out something important, reminding everyone that online reactions don’t always reflect reality – a lesson he’s learned repeatedly. He explained that despite the intense online backlash, which can feel overwhelming, their viewership is over 60 million. This means the negative reactions represent a very small fraction of their total audience, and most viewers are still enjoying the show. He emphasized the need to keep things in perspective and recognize that the vocal online critics are a relatively small group.
Even though the main The Boys series has finished, the story isn’t over yet. Prime Video has released a first look at Vought Rising, a new show set in the 1950s, and many fans believe it will include scenes from the future, especially since Jensen Ackles’ character, Soldier Boy, survived the finale. The original The Boys also hinted at several possibilities for continuing the story, but it’s still uncertain if those ideas will be explored.
