With the conclusion of Squid Game’s third season, Netflix has seemingly wrapped up that particular storyline, though spin-offs are still a possibility. While an official Squid Game anime never materialized, several other series explore similar life-or-death game concepts. Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor is a prime example, originally a manga from 1996 that was later adapted into an anime. Now, the world of Kaiji is getting a live-action remake, bringing back beloved characters.
The new live-action film, Kaiji: Jinsei Revenge Game, is scheduled for release in Japan on January 29th, 2027. A recently released trailer gave fans a sneak peek, and confirmed that Tatsuya Fujiwara will reprise his role as the gambling protagonist. Fujiwara first played Kaiji in 2009’s Kaiji: Jinsei Gyakuten Game, and returned for Kaiji 2: Jinsei Dakkan Game (2011) and Kaiji: Final Game (2020). Currently, there are no plans for a new Kaiji anime series, making this film the best way to revisit the thrilling world of high-stakes gambling. You can watch the trailer below.
The Return of Kaiji
Tatsuy Fujiwara, the star of the upcoming Kaiji movie, recently shared his excitement about returning to the intense world of high-stakes gambling after seven years. He believes the film’s unique vision, thanks to creator Nobuyuki Fukumoto’s ideas and writing, still feels fresh and entertaining. Fujiwara is also eager to see how the director and visual effects team will bring the iconic steel beam challenge to life with updated technology. He’s confident the movie will please fans and hopes everyone will see it in theaters.
Although there are two seasons of the original Kaiji anime available on Crunchyroll, that’s only a small part of the overall story. The series, which began as a manga in 1996, continues to follow the unfortunate gambler Kaiji as he’s repeatedly drawn into dangerous, life-ruining games. Interestingly, a spin-off anime called Mr. Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues focuses on one of the villains – the man who organizes these deadly games – offering a unique perspective on this bleak world. Even if we don’t get any new anime installments, Kaiji will continue with live-action adaptations.
