For more than ten years, Disney has been successfully turning its classic animated movies into live-action films, with popular examples like The Lion King, Alice in Wonderland, and last year’s Lilo & Stitch, which actually earned more than Avatar: Fire and Ash. Because these remakes keep making money, Disney plans to continue them. However, they’ve largely run out of older films to adapt, leading them to remake even relatively recent animated movies – and that’s how we’re getting a live-action version of Moana.
As a huge fan of the original Moana, I’m really excited about the live-action remake coming this summer! It’s been less than a decade since the animated film, and Dwayne Johnson is definitely coming back as Maui, which is fantastic. We already knew that, but the latest trailer gave me even more good news: Jemaine Clement is returning to voice Tamatoa, the hilarious giant crab! I’ve included the final trailer below – check it out if you haven’t already!
Live-Action Moana Reveals Best Moments From the Original
The latest trailer for Moana didn’t just introduce the flashy crab Tamatoa – it also gave fans a better look at scenes from the movie itself. We got glimpses of the goddess Te Fiti, Maui changing into different animals (and seeing his animated tattoos come to life), and Moana’s adorable animal companions, Heihei the rooster and Pua the pig.
The latest trailer for the new Moana movie doesn’t give any clues about whether there will be new music. The original Moana featured music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, and they’re all working on this film too. Disney’s live-action remakes usually include the original songs with updated recordings, and often add at least one new song, possibly to earn an Oscar nomination. Since the original Moana song “How Far I’ll Go” was nominated for an Academy Award, it would be unexpected if this new film didn’t include any new music.
The upcoming live-action remake of Moana, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Thomas Kail (Hamilton), represents a change in Disney’s approach to reimagining its animated classics. Disney recently remade Lilo & Stitch, a film from 2002, after 22 years. However, Moana, originally released in 2016, is getting a remake less than ten years later. What’s even more notable is that the original Moana remains popular, suggesting Disney sees continued potential in the animated franchise.
The first Moana film was a major success in 2016, earning over $687 million worldwide. The recent sequel, Moana 2, released eight years later, surpassed that, bringing in over $1.059 billion. This strong audience response suggests that the upcoming live-action Moana movie could be a huge hit this summer.
Moana arrives exclusively in theaters July 10, 2026.
