Doctor Who’s former showrunner reacts to game-changing show announcement: “The Doctor always survives”

Steven Moffat, who used to be the showrunner for Doctor Who, has spoken about the recent big news regarding the show.

The BBC has announced that it will be seeking new bids for the production of the show. This means the upcoming Christmas special has been cancelled, and Russell T Davies, the show’s creator and lead writer, is leaving the project. Andy Pryor, who has long been responsible for casting, is also stepping down.

In a statement to TopMob, Moffat said he hadn’t heard about the news beforehand, but offered an encouraging message to fans.

I have no idea what’s happening; this is all new to me. I don’t know what will happen next, but stay strong, everyone! It’s a really tense situation – but the Doctor always finds a way to survive.

The BBC announced that the planned Christmas special has been cancelled. They also shared an update about the show’s future, explaining that to ensure Doctor Who continues for years to come and follows BBC guidelines, they will be opening up the production process to bids from different companies this year.

Doctor Who is a key part of the BBC’s programming, and this agreement confirms the BBC’s ongoing dedication to the show, guaranteeing it will continue to entertain viewers for many years.

The BBC, Russell T Davies, and Bad Wolf have decided to cancel the Doctor Who Christmas special after giving it careful thought.

We didn’t make this decision easily, and we know fans will be upset. However, to ensure the show has a strong future, we’ve decided to focus on a full series instead of a one-time special. This will allow the show to return with the quality and scale that fans deserve when the TARDIS next appears.

A new animated Doctor Who series for CBeebies is currently being made. More information about how to get involved will be shared soon.

The BBC owns all intellectual property rights for Doctor Who. BBC Studios will continue to handle worldwide distribution, licensing, merchandise, and digital experiences for the show on behalf of the BBC.

Russell T Davies, who came back to lead the show for its 60th anniversary specials, announced on Instagram that he’s leaving again.

I’m saying goodbye to Doctor Who, but hello to an exciting new chapter! The BBC has announced it’s opening up the production of the show to bids from different companies.

Because things are now clearer about the future, we won’t be doing a Christmas special. We originally planned it just to ensure we had something in the works when we weren’t sure what was going to happen, but that’s no longer necessary.

Feel free to think I’m wrong, but you’ll be waiting a very long time to see that happen! I’m just as eager as everyone else to find out what’s next for Doctor Who. Will they keep the iconic music? What about the blue TARDIS? And will we ever see the Drahvin again? Everything is possible, which is exactly what makes Doctor Who so thrilling, surprising, and fresh. The future is here, and it’s going to be amazing!
