The first season of Every Year After, now streaming on Prime Video, ends with a shocking scene. Michael Bradway, who plays the older Florek brother, is in his Toronto office thinking about going back to Barry’s Bay when he suddenly collapses, appearing to have a heart attack.
While Carley Fortune’s 2022 novel, Ever Summer After, doesn’t include the medical issue Charlie faces in the show, it hints at where the story might go. His journey continues in her upcoming 2025 book, One Golden Summer.

And because of that, he already knew that Charlie had a heart attack! Can you believe it? He was carrying that secret the whole time! I’m seriously losing it – it just makes me love him and the show even more knowing he was in on it all along!
He wasn’t always sure how Charlie’s storyline would unfold, but after showrunner Amy B. Harris shared the plan, he spent the entire first season subtly working towards that outcome. He was constantly thinking about it and incorporating it into his performance.
Set a few years after the events of Every Summer After, One Golden Summer follows Charlie as he deals with the same heart condition that took his father’s life. This focus on his health might be accelerating the story’s timeline. Although the show hasn’t been officially renewed for a second season, the author has already shared her plan for five seasons with the characters from Barry’s Bay.
Sam (Matt Cornett) faces health issues that might lead to a reconciliation with his brother, especially after discovering his brother had a past relationship with Sam’s ex-girlfriend, Percy (Sadie Soverall), ten years ago.
Could a dramatic get-together be coming up? Charlie has a heart attack while looking at an old photo of himself, Sam, and Percy enjoying a day on the lake in the Floreks’ famous banana boat. This might also hint that Charlie’s photographer soulmate, Alice Everly, could be appearing soon.

In the series Every Summer After, Percy, played by Sadie Soverall, is a 30-year-old living in Toronto. She’s a successful senior editor at an interior design magazine and works with her best friend, Chantal, who is portrayed by Aurora Perrineau.
She explained in chapter three that her job involves leading story assignments and directing photoshoots for the nation’s leading home decor magazine. She enjoys her work and excels at it, and at a celebration of Shelter magazine’s 40th anniversary, the editor-in-chief, Brenda, acknowledged her role in successfully transitioning the publication to a digital platform.
I’ve been completely captivated by Every Year After. It’s so relatable seeing Percy, who used to be obsessed with horror, now writing obituaries. She admits it’s not her dream job, but as she put it in the first episode, it’s one of the few areas where newspapers still hire writers, and honestly, it keeps her afloat.
Through her work in media, Percy meets Chantal, who becomes a close friend. They initially connect only through phone conversations while Percy is visiting.
“Chantal and I met as interns at the city magazine where she is now the entertainment editor,” she added. “We bonded over the peculiar business of fact-checking restaurant reviews.”
On the show, Chantal is a busy lawyer who’s planning her wedding while traveling with Percy. Spending the week in Barry’s Bay allows viewers to see the complexities of her relationship with her fiancé, Drew, and how she interacts with people from Percy’s history.
The story takes place entirely in Canada, specifically in the province of Ontario. The main character, Percy, is originally from Toronto and continues to live there as an adult, a city approximately 198 miles from Barry’s Bay.
The TV series differs from the book in a couple of ways. While the main characters are still best friends, they’re American and live in Seattle. This causes a problem for Chantal when her passport expires right before her flight home. Also, though Sam (Matt Cornett) and Charlie Florek (Michael Bradway) are Canadian, just like in the book, the show moved the setting from Ontario, Canada to British Columbia.
This change enhances Seattle’s established role as a major city. As showrunner Amy Harris previously explained to Teen Vogue, once they found the ideal West Coast location, they wanted to be truthful and avoid falsely claiming it was somewhere else, like Ontario.
The challenges of distance also play a role in Sam and Percy’s developing relationship. Once Sam gets her driver’s license, she jokingly asks Percy if she could drive across the border to visit, and Percy playfully responds with, “Drive to another country? I don’t think so!”
When Charlie Florek (played by Michael Bradway) tells Percy about Sue’s death and her memorial service, Drew encourages her to go spend the week with her close friend in Barry’s Bay.
This change in the show develops Chantal, who is now a successful lawyer, from simply being a friend to Percy over the phone into someone who experiences Barry’s Bay alongside him, allowing the town to impact her life as well.
In the TV series, Chantal agrees to go with her, but in the book, Percy travels to Barry’s Bay alone, without letting her friend know, and rents a car to get there.
In chapter three, she confessed that she almost didn’t tell Chantal her plans. But then she imagined being in a car accident and no one knowing where she was or why she was so far from the city. Because of that, she quickly texted from the rental car lot, adding several ‘I’m totally fine!’ exclamation points before sending it.
Percy and Sam shared their first kiss after a scary movie night. In the summer of 2013, Sam was frightened by The Blair Witch Project and asked Percy if he could stay over. They ended up sharing Sam’s bed, where they admitted their feelings for each other and then kissed.
Even though they had a sleepover with a similar setup on the show, their first kiss doesn’t happen until the next episode, during a playfully romantic anatomy lesson the following year.
Percy decided to cut his trip to Barry’s Bay short when he found out Sam’s girlfriend, Taylor Curtis, needed to be at the reading of Sue’s will. Taylor, who is handling Sue’s estate, was surprised to learn she had inherited The Tavern, a fact that shocked everyone present.
Charlie is considering selling his restaurant to Delilah Mason (Abigail Cowen), who used to be close friends with Percy, and this sale causes tension between the brothers and Percy. In the book, The Tavern is ultimately bought by Julien, a longtime employee, who gets a special price from Charlie and Sam.
Similar to the book, Delilah first goes to Barry’s Bay with Percy on his annual visit. But in the TV series, Percy discovers that Delilah has become a regular in town—and is now close to the Florek brothers. She and her husband, Whit, even own a beautiful summer home there.
Both the book and the TV series reveal that Sam and Charlie’s father passed away from a heart attack. The series, though, delves deeper into how Sue copes with her loss.
Losing my dad was incredibly tough on my sister. I was a teenager at the time, and honestly, she really struggled. Looking back, my younger brother was only around eleven, and I think I shielded him from a lot of it. I probably didn’t even realize I was doing it, but I just wanted to protect him from seeing how much it was affecting her. It’s funny how you process grief at different ages, and I think I tried to be strong for both of them.
Looking back, my mom really struggled with sadness for a long time. Honestly, it felt like a deep, heavy cloud over her. I remember so many days she just couldn’t get out of her pajamas. It wasn’t just a bad day here and there; it was a consistent feeling of being down. Coming home from school to find her silently sitting at the kitchen table, just…staring off into space, was honestly terrifying as a kid. It created a lot of anxiety and I didn’t understand what was happening.
That period marked a significant change in old man Florek. Charlie explains that he also started helping out with tasks like grocery shopping.
He says things improved as she recovered. However, he admits he’s still angry with her for leaving them to cope on their own that year.
Throughout the story, both Percy and Charlie feel deeply guilty about something that happened, causing Percy to permanently leave Barry’s Bay.
After Charlie announced he wouldn’t be spending the summer at Barry’s Bay because he was starting college early, Percy found herself spending a lot of time with him. One vulnerable moment led to them having sex, despite Charlie secretly being in love with his brother’s girlfriend, Percy.
Following Sam’s decision not to propose to Taylor in the fifth episode, he seeks reassurance from Percy that they can now pursue a relationship, confirming he’s available. This conversation leads Percy to confess to a past encounter with Charlie – they slept together after ending their relationship ten years ago, and she feels guilty about it.
Hearing the news for the first time, Sam was heartbroken and turned away, even as Percy desperately tried to explain how sorry she was.
Percy kept calling Charlie, and finally texted him to reveal that Charlie’s younger brother had found out about their disastrous plan. Charlie then confronted Sam, but Sam responded by completely cutting him out of his life, especially after their mother’s memorial service.
However, by the time Percy finally tells Sam the truth, he’s had years to process it. This is because Charlie had already informed Sam and Sue about it just a few months after the event occurred.
