So, I just read an interview with the new head of Xbox, Asha Sharma, and she basically said that if Xbox is doing well financially, they’re planning on making more games that you can only play on Xbox. Sounds awesome if you’re like me and love having games no one else can get!
When asked about the situation, the executive acknowledged the division was struggling. That’s why they’re starting with a couple of key exclusive games – Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution – which were revealed last week.
This week, the Xbox Podcast strongly suggested that a third-person shooter from The Coalition is also coming to PlayStation 5. They mistakenly released a trailer online that included the PS5 logo at the very end.
On the subject, Sharma said:
We’re one of the top two game publishers globally, and that means we want our games available on as many platforms as possible. A wider audience makes us stronger. Plus, we’re evolving into a platform ourselves, and most platforms offer exclusive content and services to attract users.
This is a new beginning for us. As you pointed out, our business is currently facing challenges, so we’re starting with a couple of special, exclusive products. If those do well and the business improves, we plan to expand our offerings.
Sharma wasn’t directly asked about the consequences of declining business performance, but she did acknowledge that rising component costs are a major challenge for the entire industry.
She believes it will be difficult for most people to justify the high cost of new gaming consoles, and she anticipates significant changes to how games are purchased and played later this year.
It’s going to be interesting to see how this all pans out.
I strongly believe games like Halo: Combat Evolved, Fable, and Forza Horizon 6 will be hugely popular on the PS5. However, I’m not as confident that Gears of War: E-Day or Clockwork Revolution will significantly improve Xbox’s standing in the current market.
It’s possible Microsoft is testing something out, but I’m not clear on what’s actually different now compared to when Starfield first came out last year as a game only available on their consoles.
I guess we’re going to find out what happens either way.
