In my humble opinion as a film critic, a once-maligned project within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) could be poised for redemption in the comic book world. It’s intriguing to reflect on the extraordinary triumphs of the MCU and unearth its missteps, but they do exist – even in the realm of comics. The unique aspect about comics is that they offer ample space for innovation and learning from mistakes. A character or team can be subtly reintroduced or given a significant role within a larger narrative before gracing the pages of an ongoing series. This fascinating possibility seems to be unfolding with one of the least successful MCU films in recent memory.
The television series “Marvel’s Inhumans,” which aired on ABC in 2017, had a brief run of only one season. Initially intended as a movie, the series was reimagined for television but received lackluster reviews. Currently, it holds an 11% Tomatometer rating and a 42% Popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting its underwhelming response. Meanwhile, the comics were also promoting the Inhumans around the same time with various titles and events centered around their powerful group. However, the downfall of the Inhumans came in 2018 with the event series “Death of the Inhumans,” effectively shelving the franchise. But a promising tale could breathe new life into the once-struggling Inhumans as hinted by their appearance in “Imperial.
Imperial May Be Leading to the Return of the Inhumans
In the latest update, Marvel unveiled the cover and details for Imperial #4, the concluding chapter of the four-part series penned by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini. The intriguing aspect of the cover artwork by Marco Checchetto lies in its portrayal of Lockjaw, the teleporting Inhuman canine, holding Ronan the Accuser’s hammer in his jaws. This image, on its own, may not hint at the return of the Inhumans, but the plot summary for Imperial #4 provides a strong indication.
The news announcement for Imperial Issue 4 spotlights the primary combatants in the cosmic struggle depicted on the cover, such as Hulk, Nova, Shuri, Star-Lord, and Super-Skrull. However, it hints at the inclusion of a potent faction that has yet to engage in the conflict, which hasn’t been identified…up until now. Since all characters displayed on Imperial Issue 4’s cover have been named except for Lockjaw, the only logical assumption is that this previously unseen group will likely be the Inhumans.
It seems that Lockjaw’s appearance in the cover might suggest another reason. With empires like the Skrulls, Kree, Shi’ar, Spartax, Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda, and Sakaar participating in this “Imperial” event, it appears that the Inhumans are missing from the action. Considering that “Imperial” aims to establish a new series set in space, it would be ideal to reintroduce and revitalize the Inhumans within this context.
San Diego Comic-Con has unveiled five spinoffs from the Imperial universe: She-Hulk’s Planet, Nova: Centurion, Black Panther’s Intergalactic journey, Exiles, and Imperial Guardians. It’s uncertain if Inhumans will be included in these titles, but they might be part of a subsequent wave. Additionally, Marvel might not be prepared to disclose the conclusion of the Imperial saga, to preserve the excitement surrounding the return of the Inhumans.
Indeed, it’s plausible that this secretive group could be the Elders of the Universe, given that Grandmaster might be among the two puppeteers manipulating events from behind the curtain. Known for his complex strategies, masterminding the assassination of galactic leaders as part of a grand personal game aligns perfectly with his modus operandi.
